Synopsis

Acclaimed actor Kiefer Sutherland (known to many as either the son of accomplished thespian Donald Sutherland or ex-fiancee of Julia Roberts) stars here as a hard-edged hit man. Known as the world's best professional killer, Sutherland is living a life of detached solitude when he is given an assignment that pairs him up with a sultry hitchhiker (Melora Walters). Before long, he finds there is more to her than meets the eye, as he becomes entangled deeper and deeper into a web of fatal lies and double-crosses.

4.0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly good 'hitman with a twist' tale, 30 April 2003
Desert Saints is a surprisingly good 'hitman with a twist' tale by first time writer/director Richard Greenberg.

He takes the standard 'assassin's last hit' formula, and shakes it up by introducing FBI agents with their own agendas, a 'plant' who may or may not be falling for the gunman, and, in Kiefer Sutherland, a hero/villain who is ruthless, sexy, and, ultimately, sympathetic.

His performance is remarkable, and is matched by Melora Walters, as the latest of his string of doomed accomplices, who is keeping even more secrets than he is!

She shows a remarkable range in her role, at times ditzy, at times mysterious and sexy, and, by the film's climax, intelligent and self-sufficient.

For an indie, the cast is first-rate all the way, with the always reliable Jamey Sheridan as a veteran FBI agent, as dedicated to his job as Sutherland is to his.

Leslie Stefanson as Sheridan's second-in-command, and the wild card of the operation; and, in a very sexy cameo, Rachel Ticotin, who smolders as a waitress and occasional bedmate for Sutherland.

Greenberg cleverly uses flashbacks and flashforwards to lull the viewer into believing they know how the story will end, then springs a surprise that works extremely well, and will have you paying VERY close attention to detail during the last five minutes!

If you are a fan of Sutherland, or stories with a twist and enough sensuality to raise your heartbeat a few notches, 'Desert Saints' is the film for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!, 24 Jul 2006
By Susan Giesecke - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Desert Saint is a brilliant film from writer and director, Richard Greenburg. I hadn't even heard of it until a few days ago. I got it, mainly because it starred Kiefer Sutherland, Melora Walters (Magnolia; Boogie Nights) also co-stars alongside Sutherland. Kiefer Sutherland and Melora Walters' on-screen chemistry is brilliant, so are their performances, especially Melora Walters.

Melora Walters is absolutly brilliant in this film as the latest accomplace of Kiefer Sutherland. I'm actually surprised that she doesnt get enough recognition, and only has small parts in some movies. She was in WiseGirls with Mariah Carrey, but Desert Saints has to be her best film to date.

The supporting cast are great, Jamey Sheridan (Stephen King's The Stand; The Cradle Will Rock; The Ice Storm) as FBI agent, George Scanlon ; Leslie Stefanson as Donna Marbury, Sheridan's second-in-command.

The plot is basically, I'm not going to spoil it, about an rutheless, and yet sympathetic assassin (played by Kiefer Sutherland) who is on the run from the FBI for a number of high-profile assassinations.

This film is extremely, and cleverly well with it use flashbacks and flashforwards, it makes the viewer think that they know how this story will end. But then, just after you think that you've got it all figured out, there is a twist near end, especially in the last ten minutes, which work really well and takes you completely by surprise.

This was a great film, for an independent movie. I'd strongly recommend it if you're a Kiefer Sutherland fan, or you're fan of stories with a twist. Desert Saints is a definiate must-see, you will not be disappointed.
