Book Description

3 Feb 2011
"GREETINGS. THERE IS A BODY BURIED ON YOUR PROPERTY, COVERED IN YOUR BLOOD. THE UNFORTUNATE YOUNG LADY'S NAME IS RITA JONES. IN HER JEANS POCKET YOU'LL FIND A SLIP OF PAPER WITH A PHONE NUMBER ON IT. CALL THAT NUMBER. IF I HAVE NOT HEARD FROM YOU BY 8:00 P.M., THE POLICE WILL RECEIVE AN ANONYMOUS CALL. I'LL TELL THEM WHERE RITA JONES IS BURIED ON YOUR PROPERTY, HOW YOU KILLED HER, AND WHERE THE MURDER WEAPON CAN BE FOUND IN YOUR HOUSE. (I DO BELIEVE A PARING KNIFE IS MISSING FROM YOUR KITCHEN.) I STRONGLY ADVISE AGAINST GOING TO THE POLICE, AS I AM ALWAYS WATCHING YOU." Andrew Z. Thomas is a successful writer of suspense thrillers, living the dream at his lake house in the piedmont of North Carolina. One afternoon in late spring, he receives a bizarre letter that eventually threatens his career, his sanity, and the lives of everyone he loves. A murderer is designing his future, and for the life of him, Andrew can't get away. About the Author: BLAKE CROUCH was born near the piedmont town of Statesville, North Carolina in 1978. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated in 2000 with degrees in English and Creative Writing. Blake is the author of four novels and numerous short stories. He lives with his family in southwest Colorado, where he is at work on a new book. His website is www.blakecrouch.com. PRAISE FOR DESERT PLACES... Harrowing...terrific...a whacked out combination of Stephen King and Cormac McCarthy. PAT CONROY Crouch's smart, tight prose displays plenty of narrative energy...[he] shows real talent here... PUBLISHERS WEEKLY An ingenious, diabolical debut that calls into question all our easy moral assumptions. DESERT PLACES is a genuine thriller that pulses with adrenaline from start to finish. Blake Crouch is one of the most exciting new writers I've read in years. VAL MCDERMID DESERT PLACES is about survival, both emotional and physical. Crouch delivers his description of place with telling and vivid prose...[and his] carefully crafted characters make the story immediate, intense and thoroughly believable...will linger in the [reader's] consciousness long after the book is read. DENVER POST [T]he fastest, meanest read I've had in quite a while. Crouch clamps on and propels you forward, even though you're not at all sure you want to go into the disturbing places where he's taking you. THE CAPITAL TIMES Wow. Sometimes you stumble across a book that just plain creeps you out. There are many types of DESERT PLACES, and the most inhospitable are in the human heart. ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS [T]wisted...surprises around every turn...don't climb in if you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, might be pregnant, or are under four feet tall. IREDELL CITIZEN Crouch maintains a roller-coaster pace, with twists that leave you blinking. THE CHARLOTTE OBSERVER [Crouch's] writing is sick, and I mean that in the very best way. If DESERT PLACES is any indication of what we can expect from Crouch in the future, be prepared to see his name on the bestseller lists. OTTAWA SUN This is a complex, cleverly constructed novel of motive, and Crouch takes his time bringing us through the story...it's a great debut. Crouch is an author to watch. THE GLOBE AND MAIL (TORONTO) Two hundred and eighty pages of pure, lean thriller...prose that's throat grabbing...Blake Crouch is a major league talent who's going to be really, really big. SARAH WEINMAN, Gumshoe-Award Winning Crime Columnist [C]arried by rich, image-filled prose. Crouch will handcuff you, blindfold you, throw you in the trunk of a car, and drag you kicking and screaming through a story so intense, so emotionally packed, that you will walk away stunned. Review

"An ingenious, diabolical debut that calls into question all our easy moral assumptions. "Desert Places" is a genuine thriller that pulses with adrenaline from start to finish. Blake Crouch is one of the most exciting new writers I've read in years."- Val McDermid, author of "The Last Temptation" "Blake Crouch's terrific but harrowing first novel, "Desert Places," is deeply disturbing and troubling but hard to put down. In the end, Mr. Crouch's book reminded me of a whacked out combination of Stephen King and Cormac McCarthy."- Pat Conroy, author of "My Losing Season" "A harrowing, compulsively readable novel, "Desert Places" throws a spotlight on humans' ability to administer--and withstand--psychological and physical pain. Crouch's taunt, muscular prose and expert plotting make this one tough to set down. You'll read it in a sitting--I certainly did."- Gregg Hurwitz, author of "The Kill Clause" "Gritty, sometimes gruesome, and always gripping. Blake Crouch loo --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars This author just gets better! 1 Oct 2011
By Shep
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I must admit that part one on this novel reminded me of some Koontz novels (not always a bad thing) and although the early part of the storyline was a little clichéd, it held my attention enough to get to part two and I'm glad it did, the remainder of this book was excellent and prompted me to immediately order the two sequels. Crouch is fast becoming one of my favourite authors.

My only real critism is more of the way Kindle displays many books as a percentage, rather than page numbers(will the new Kindle fix that?), the actual end of the story was at 78% with the remainder being book previews etc which I never actually read, prefering to rely on the buyer feedback.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another brilliant book 10 Aug 2011

I discovered this author by accident, I am so glad I found him. Someone said, if you love S King, you will love this. I have to say This author under all of his pen names leaves S King eating his dust. Love the books, the plots, the descriptions, the terror of wondering if its safe to turn the next page late at night, wondering if you will sleep later???
Amazing, I'm working my way through every novel he has written and has yet to write.
Love the work

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing 25 Nov 2011

I just couldn't put this down, and read it in a few days, which is a new record for me. Blake Crouch really knows how to write. Completely amazed by how he manages to keep the pace going and to really draw you into these horrific scenarios where it seems like there is no way out for the main character.

I've just purchased the following book in the series and am going to start reading it now.

Plus it's so ridiculously cheap!

AWESOME!

5.0 out of 5 stars Grabs you like a vice and doesn't let you go. 3 April 2012

This is the first book I've read from this author and WOW what a book. From the beginning right to the end it's impossible to put it down. The characters are amazing although a couple of them are a touch psychotic. When I was reading it I wanted to shout to the main character Andy "don't do that" or "don't go in there". It's amazing how Blake Crouch can make you feel involved in the story. I would recommend this book even though it's sick, gory and scary in parts. I've already started reading the second book and I can tell from only reading a few pages that it's going to be an excellant follow up. A fantastic author. I hope the author is going to write a lot more books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! If you love thrillers - read it! 1 Nov 2013

Blake Crouch is becoming one of my favourite authors as he never disappoints.
I'm always careful not to give any idea of a plot away when reviewing books as I think spoilers
are just that - spoilers! All I will say is this book is original, the plot twists and turns and I couldn't turn
the pages quick enough. The characters are unbelievable and the setting for the book is atmospheric
and gripping. My husband is now reading it and equally enjoying it. A real must buy!

3.0 out of 5 stars Desert places 22 Oct 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've read many books by Blake Crouch, Jack Kilborn and have not yet been disappointed. Desert places isn't one of his strongest novels, but still enjoyable. My appetite has been wet and I will download the sequel to see what happens to our hero.
