This is worth it for the photographs alone. They are beautifully evocative, capturing the atmosphere and character of some of the demanding and remote parts of the Middle Eastern world. The text is written as an autobiographical narrative, relating the writers experience as he takes on the challenge of epic trips into territories largely untravelled by Westerners. His skill is to enter into the world of those whom he meets and to explain their values with great sensitivity and insight. His warmth and admiration for the friends he makes comes through strongly and so brings them to life. Its also remarkable as he is self-effacing. He is evidently all too wary of imposing his lifestyle and values on those that he meets, and though he can be judgemental, he is never intrusive. So as a reader you can glide along with him rather than having to put up with any self-conscious pomposity. He is evidently far braver than most of us, and happy to put up with levels of discomfort that would be unendurable for my sensitivity. But it makes it all the more magical and compelling, as he calmly takes you through the extraordinary in a way that lets you share his fascination and enthusiasm for life lived away from the dulling predictability and tedium that most choose over risk and change. Great to read on a plane or in the comfort of home with a beer close to hand!

Having previously read some of Thesigers exploits, I decided to purchase this book. From looking at the cover on Amazon, I imagined (foolishly) that this would be an omnibus copy of his previous works. How disappointed I was when it was delivered, to find it merely contains extracts, and poorly printed photographs.

This is a book that I have known and loved for many years, I was delighted to find a replacement for my old copy.
The book is as lovely as ever, but I was disappointed that there was no dust jacket - this was not mentioned in the condition review.
