Product Description

Review

"This ultimate trivia book for fans of BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs invites the reader to delve into a treasure trove of castaway anecdotes and amusing luxury items... Guaranteed to take readers on a magical journey through the last 70 years of music" (Telegraph Books)

"Thoroughly researched, lively and lighthearted... an artifact - the kind you would take to a desert island" (Big Issue)

"Mitchell Symons is the doyen of trivialists, who has been truffling out absurd facts ever since he wrote all the questions in Trivial Pursuit that weren’t wrong. This book is exhaustive and slightly mad, and my life was appreciably poorer before I owned it. Outstanding" (Marcus Berkmann The Spectator)

Book Description

This is a companion to the fabulous '70 Years Of Desert Island Discs'. It really is a book for the lovers of facts and figures, and should, ideally, be taken in conjunction with the aforementioned book. Instead of working out who said what, who chose the luxury items or the books, this does it for you. It is pleasurable enough but I do enjoy the detective work of foraging throught the basic words of the guests and putting the pieces together myself from the original sources, where available. This is like having the answers to crossword puzzles in the back when you get stuck. Very tempting to have a sneak but useful.

Nevertheless, a well-produced book that is wonderfully entertaining enough as a stand alone buy and read. Solid, revealing, well-presented and full of fascinating facts and fun from some 3,000 shows. More than a list, more a pick-up and thumb-through collection that will last for years. No annual book of whatsoever that is a dust-collector. Keep it at hand. A mine of information and unlikely to be seen again in the near future (unlike the Guiness Records Books, superb in themselves but always annual).

I bought this book (DID: Flotsam and Jetsam) to satisfy a number of burning questions regarding the choices of DID castaways over the last 70 years. These were simple and rather obvious questions, such as what is the most popular piece of music or book chosen? Bizarrely, such simple questions are not easily located or even answered.

For example, the most popular piece of music is not revealed until p134, a good 70 pages into the music section, and following many pages of abstract facts such as 'castaways who chose their own or a relative's piece of music'.

Furthermore, the most popular book choice is never categorically stated. Dickens (61), Tolstoy (50) and Proust (48) are noted as the three most popular novelists, respectively. War and Peace (Tolstoy) is specifically mentioned as being chosen on 43 occasions and given that this work appears more often than any work by Dickens, presumably makes it the most popular book choice. Unfortunately, DID: Flotsam and Jetsam fail to provide details on any of the works by Proust (despite the novelist appearing 48 times), and as it happens (using additional research), A la recherche de temps perdu (by Proust) may actually be the most requested book. This book is not even mentioned in DID: Flotsam and Jetsam, at least not overtly.

Okay, so there are a lot of data to analyze, but I feel it has been sliced poorly in DID: Flotsam and Jetsam. The obvious queries are not answered (at all, or logically) and it feels like a jumble of unsystematically organized facts. I'm sure all the information is in there somewhere, but finding it is a problem and trusting another.

Cover 2.0 Looks a bit grim, cold and uninviting! Had quite a few chuckles as I worked my way through. A good mixture of happy and sad memories. I will take out again from the library sometime and read again.

Entertaining trivia and lists from Radio 4 programme Desert Island Discs. Until they publish an encyclopedic catalogue of every choice by every guest, this is something to be going on with.
