Product Description

Review

'Waris Dirie was a victim once, but she never will be again. She is still fighting, still using her beauty and courage to take what she has learned to try and put things right' Sunday Express 'Remarkable courage... the most beautiful inspiration to anyone' Elton John 'Honest, warm and insightful' THE VOICE

Product Description

Fashion model, UN ambassador and courageous spirit, Waris Dirie is a remarkable woman, born into a traditional family of tribal desert nomads in Somalia. She told her story - enduring, at five years old, the ancient and savage custom of female circumcision; running away at twelve on foot through the desert in order to escape an arranged marriage; being discovered by Terence Donovan as she worked as a cleaner in London; and becoming a top fashion model - in her book, the worldwide bestseller, Desert Flower. Although Waris Dirie fled her homeland, she never forgot the country and culture that moulded her. The world of famine and violence, where women have no voice and no place - the very world that nearly destroyed her also gave her the tools to survive. She traces the roots of her courage, resilience and humour back to her motherland, and most particularly to her mother. Desert Dawn is the story of that return and a testimony to the stubborn fact that you can love something dearly and yet not love all that it represents. Desert Dawn is about coming home.

5.0 out of 5 stars REAL LIFE Eye Opener, Brilliant read, 7 Nov 2003
This review is from: Desert Dawn (Paperback)
I was hooked since I picked the book up, funny thing is I had no idea who Waris was before I read the book, I didnt even know it was a true story, I read a few pages in the shop and I was hooked. I felt Waris's pain, from reading this book, I could indentify as a woman her personal struggles though I didnt go through anything remotely familiar, Ladies, a true heartfelt story, a must read, Gentlemen a woman's perspective, a definate read. This book shows that you most definately can get what you want in life if you fight and just dream a little bit more, I am inspired. Well done Waris, Well done you made it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really useful and insightful, 12 May 2008
Having worked with a number of recently immigrated and poorly integrated Somali families, in particular women and girls, and having striven to understand the culture, I have found this book really useful as it has given a very comlplementary view to the statistics and official documents that I have relied on so far.

4.0 out of 5 stars A worthy sequel, 2 Jan 2008
To fully appreciate this book you have to read Desert Flower when we are first introduced to Waris and her amazing (and sometimes unbelievable) rise to fame. This is the second installment in her autobiography and traces her return to her homeland. This is not the book to read if you want a deep insight into foreign politics or another culture - but it does show us one woman's nomad family and her deep love for their way of life. At times it is too simplistic and Waria's naiviety, even after living in the West for so long, is frustrating but there is no denying the charm of Waris' story and her uplifting determination to find a balance between challenging the barbaric rituals of her homeland and respecting her family.
