The painting's original owner, a Kuwaiti prince, from whom it was seized during Iraq's occupation of Kuwait in the First Gulf War, has asked for the British Government's help in retrieving it. They owe the Prince a favour for backing them during the Iraq War, so they agree to help. But rather than agreeing to pay the terrorists' ransom -- which they fear will be pumped into funding terrorist operations across the world -- Her Majesty's Government decides to send in a team of hardened ex-Special Forces, led by ex-SAS hero Mick Kilbride and his sidekick "East End" Eddie.

If you want a short, action packed book to read, then this is the book for you.

Desert Claw is an exciting, high-octane action thriller. Following a complicated deal struck between the British Government and a Kuwaiti prince, a team of ex-Special Service agents are forced to retrieve a valuable painting from a hostile location. Be prepared for double-crossing, ambushes and hand-to-hand combat as the expedition takes a series of unexpected twists and turns. It is also important not to overlook the attention paid by the author to the human cost of war, especially in developing countries. Some particularly gruesome moments oscillate between exciting and appalling as the reader straddles a line between fiction and reality - especially in the context of an all-too-familiar conflict. All in all, a fantastic short book.

Fun, Quick, and Entertaining Read

I believe that my title sums this book up pretty well.
You will read this book/short story in one sitting - therefore the story is quick and full of excitement/action. Damien Lewis is a great author who knows how to write a compelling war/action story. I have read everything that he has put out thus far and am yet to be let wanting. Again, recommended.
Note: this book is around 100 pages and is not his usual full-length. I was unaware of this when I bought it. Just an FYI.

Very Average and Predictable Story but Good to See Short Stories Being Sold Now as Stand Alones

To say Desert Claw is predictable would be an understatement. There are no surprises throughout the entire hour long tale and the stupidness and non ability to hit the British/Americans with bullets of the Iraqi enemy is exaggerated to unrealistic heights. That said though this book will more than pass the time on an hour long flight or bus/train trip and is an excellent alternative for those looking for something with more substance than the local newspaper or tabloid magazines. Being that it is of such little overall quality Desert Claw can also easily be abandoned in the pocket of the seat in front as well to pass the time for the next traveller. It is good to see magazine/newspaper priced book alternatives on the shelves of shops in airports and bus and train stations these days though.
In Desert Claw ex British and New Zealand SAS as well as ex Delta and Navy Seal American soldiers are available for hire. They are contacted by an ex British major who tells them England needs them to do a favour for a Kuwaiti prince whose worthless but sentimental painting was stolen in the 1991 invasion and is now in the hands of a terrorist organisation who looted it from one of Saddam's palaces. They are to leave no survivors, and of course if they are discovered Britain will deny any knowledge of their mission.
