Product Description

Product Description

Winner of the coveted Prix de Rome, Alfred Desenclos remains an almost unknown figure in 20th-century music. His contribution to the distinguished French tradition of Requiem Mass settings dates from 1963; incorporating influences from Gregorian chant as well as rich harmonies based on added-note chords, this piece with its passionate outpourings is a revelation. It forms the centrestone of David Trendell s programme, which also features music by Villette who shared Desenclos interest in jazz and Poulenc, whose return to Catholicism in 1936 initiated a line of pieces, beginning with the 'Litanies à la Vierge noire de Rocamadour', that represent some of the most significant religious choral music of the 20th century. Trendell s choir is on ravishing form, and the organ at his alma mater, Exeter College, Oxford, partners this music like a velvet glove. 'David Trendell s fine choir glows with warmth and commitment' The Observer, May 2012 'Credit to David Trendell for eliciting sustained intensity of expression ... youthful timbre imparts a freshness to the interpretation' BBC Music Magazine, August 2013

Review

'A delightful set from the blue-chip choral label of the day.' 4 Stars --Choir & Organ

This undergraduate choir has a formidable musical unity under David Trendell. On their latest disc, alongside Poulenc s affecting Litanies à la Vierge noire, they sing pieces by two of that composer s near-forgotten peers, Alfred Desenclos (1912-71), who won the Prix de Rome in 1942, and Pierre Villette (1926-98). Desenclos s Requiem (1963) is spaciously dignified and meditative. --The Sunday Times

'This is fine music, often beautiful, occasionally dramatic and always deeply felt and it gets an eloquent reading here.' --Recording of the Month, Music Web International,

Heard an extract on the radio. This style of music has a strong appeal to me. Somewhat Durufle-like, as the radio announcer said. Sounds to me like a pretty immaculate performance and recording.

This CD is nothing short of brilliant. I'd never even heard of Desenclos before, but picked the CD up on a whim as I like a bit of Vilette and Poulenc. In effect though, it's the Desenclos that is the absolute stand-out work on here - an amazingly rich piece full of texture and complex harmony. It is sung beautifully, and the soloists (taken from the choir) are outstanding. Why Desenclos's music is not better-known is a mystery!

(There's also an interesting side-story relating to the Desenclos Requiem being the subject of a plagiarism case in America, a fascinating story.)

Since buying the CD I have also learned that David Trednall, the choir's conductor, recently passed away, so this CD represents his final epitaph in some way. An incredible memoir to leave behind.

Lush CD of unusual french music, highly recommended. IMO this is the best of King's College's recordings so far. The Villette pieces in particular are spot on.
