Product Description

This 111 page book entitled 'Descent to the Goddess: A Way of Initiation for Women' written by Sylvia Brinton Perera (ISBN 0919123058) was published by Inner City Books in 1981 (Inner City Books was founded in 1980 to promote the understanding and practical application of the work of C. G. Jung). The cover depicts the goddess Inanna-Ishtar (a Sumerian figure in terracotta; Louvre). It is a highly original and provocative work about women's freedom and the need for an inner, female authority in a masculine-oriented society. Combining ancient texts and modern dreams, the author, a practising therapist, presents a way of feminine initiation. Inanna-Ishtar, Sumerian Goddess of Heaven and Earth, journeys into the underworld to Ereshkigal, her dark "sister" and returns. So modern women must descend from their old role-determined behaviour into the depths of their instinct and image patterns, to find anew the Great Goddess and restore her values to modern culture. Men too will be interested in this book, both for its revelations of women's essential nature and for its implications in terms of their own inner journey. Chapters: 1. Descent and Return. 2. Above and Below: Qualities of the Feminine. 3. Suffering and Standing Separate; 4. The Bipolar Goddess: Two Sisters; 5. Descent, Sacrifice, Transformation; 6. Unveiling and Passing through the Gates; 7. Witnessing and the Search for Wisdom; 8. Empathetic-Creative Consiousness; 9. Returning and Its Price: The Scapegoat-Beloved; 10. Balancing: The Acceptance of Process; Glossary of Jungian Terms; Notes; Bibliography; Index

5.0 out of 5 stars Helped me make sense of my own descent, 25 Jun 2004
This review is from: Descent to the goddess (Paperback)
This is a Feminist-Jungian interpretation of the ancient Sumerian Inanna Myth. She explores the characters of Inanna and Ereshkigal and the nature of Inanna's descent, death and resurrection clearly and powerfully.

She sees Inanna as representing "daughters fo the patriarchy" - outwardly successful women who have taken on patriarchal values, and Ereshkigal as the "deep feminine" - the feminine side that we as individuals and as a society have rejected and pushed into the shadow. The descent of Inanna to the underworld is then the journey to die to the old life and reconnect to the deep feminine.

For me this book gave meaning and structure to my own "descent to the underworld". Much of the book resonated deeply with my experience. Perera writes powerfully and with authority, and draws from a wide range of sources.

I liked the fact that this is a specifically feminine interpretation of descent and transformation, and it complements the many books and accounts of the descent to the psychic underworld that are not feminine or that are consciously or unconsciously masculine.

Although it is slim, this is a meaty book. If you have come across the Inanna myth in other books (eg Maureen Murdoch's "the Heroine's Journey") and want to know more, or if you are a successful woman who seems to be being sucked into your own "underworld" and want to understand it better, I recommend this highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Discovering the Goddess within, 6 May 2006

This review is from: Descent to the goddess (Paperback)
I have already been on an adventure of discovering the Goddess in all her disguises hidden in Christianity, in Islam , in the Jewish and Buddhisttraditions and of course in me. I just loved this book. It looks at the story of Inanna and relates it to Jungian Psychology. Whether you like psychology or not there is A LOT in this book that relates to us in every day. The roots of all the spiritual traditions are here in the story of this Goddess.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Deep and True Feminine, 4 Sep 2001
By Nancy R. Fenn "The IntrovertZCoach" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Descent to the goddess (Paperback)
As an astrologer, Jungian and VisionCoach, I often recommend this book to my clients as a healing journey. It is probably necessary to have a little Jungian and mythological background to enjoy this particular approach to the universal truth of the female. The style is elevated and uses language familiar to Jungian analysts.

You cannot imagine what you will find in this book, though -- it is so different from Women's Lib and and the generalized Greek and Roman myths, for example.

Perera discusses the bi-polar nature of women and mythically describes their arrival to Power and The Deep Feminine.

If you are serious about your path of development on the female side, I can't think of a more worthwhile book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Therapists Treating Depression, 21 Oct 1999
By Rhonda M. Griffin - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Descent to the goddess (Paperback)
As a therapist (16 yrs), I have been using the material in this book for reframing the experience of depression for my clients. The clients I have introduced this book to are now reframing their illness as an intiation into a greater understanding of their relation to self/soul. While at times dry for most laypeople, It has become a reference book for my practice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal...A totally unique interpretation of Inanna's descent, 4 Dec 2006
By Goddessnadiya "goddessnadiya" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Descent to the goddess (Paperback)
If you choose any book on Inanna, or even on the Goddess- and there are many- this is the one to get. Absolutely one of the best books I have ever read on the Goddess Inanna. Truly inspiring. What is truly great about this book is the way the author weaves the of Inanna's descent in a way that makes the relevance to women's lives and psyche's today clear and poetic. the author carefully and skillfully describes how aspects of the goddess Inanna have been relegated to the Shadow "other" and how reclaiming her lessons women can intergrate and reclaim themselves. But this book goes beyond simple Jungian analysis. Perera carefully describes Inanna's descent and interprets it's beauty and wisdom. I have read many books on Inanna and the Sumerian pantheon. This book remains one of my favorites. I can't rave about this book enough. highly recomended for the astrologer wishing to learn more about the roots of Venus, Sumerian buff, Inanna fan, or current explorer of earth based/ goddess based faiths. this book has been the foundation to which I have chosen to explore and learn about Jungian theories. A totally unique interpretation. For any woman on an exploration into herself.
