Definitely one of the best albums I have heard in the last year.
It builds nicely on first album,'Out of the Shadow', and shows how the band have grown. Where the first album showcased songs written by frontman Zach Rogue, this album shows the influence of a whole band approach and the sound is more varied and certainly amplified. Songs like 'Publish my love' and '10:1' have more volume than anything on 'Out of the Shadow' but retain all of the melody and beauty that made the first album stand out. These are more immediate and catchy songs that leave you humming for hours.
The album is not a total departure, however, from the first album. Songs like 'California' and 'Salesman at the day of the Parade' are simple, beautiful acoustic efforts that are awash with melody and held together by Rogue's vocals.
If this album is your first experience of the band you will not be disappointed. Fans of The Shins, Death Cab for Cutie and Kingsbury Manx will also definitely find something to enjoy here.

Following on from the excellent debut of Out Of The Shadow wasn't going to be easy. That was one of the surprise highlights of 2004 and quickly established Zach Rogue as a talented songwriter. Anyone who hoped for more of the same will not be disappointed. Vultures essentially grows out of that earlier success and adds a little variation. This isn't a direct photocopy by any means, but track for track Rogue Wave tread solid and familiar ground. "Catform" and "California" are particular acoustic highlights rivalling the pop-hooks of "Postage Stamp World" for melody. None of the faster tracks are quite as good as "Endless Shovel" however, but it's all good quality stuff. Lead single "10:1" sounds like nothing on Shadow - sounding like a more urgent and immediate Flaming Lips. Vultures is a steady and solid follow-up that, while doing nothing much new, does suggest good things for the future.
