The Descendants is the first mainstream American movie scored exclusively with Hawaiian music, most of it created by acknowledged masters of the genre, both modern and classical--Gabby Pahinui, Ray Kane, Keola Beamer, Lena Machado, Sonny Chillingworth, Jeff Peterson, and Rev. Dennis Kamakahi, among others. The filmmakers sought to make a movie with a distinctly Hawaiian flavor, and the music was a crucial component. As well as echoing the experience of watching the film, The Descendants soundtrack will reveal to listeners the soulful and emotional spectrum of Hawaiian music over the decades and serve as an eye-opening introduction to some of Hawaiian music’s greatest and most essential artists.
From Alexander Payne, the creator of the Oscar-winning Sideways, The Descendants is set in Hawaii and follows the unpredictable journey of an American family at a crossroads. Matt King (George Clooney), a husband and father of two girls, must re-examine his past and navigate his future when his wife is in a boating accident off Waikiki. He awkwardly attempts to repair his relationship with his daughters while wrestling with a decision to sell his family’s land. Handed down from Hawaiian royalty and missionaries, the Kings own some of the last priceless virgin parcels of tropical beach in the islands. When Alexandra drops the bombshell that her mother was in the midst of a romantic fling at the time of the accident, Matt has to take a whole new look at his life, not to mention his legacy, during a week of momentous decisions. With his girls in tow, he embarks on a haphazard search for his wife’s lover. Along the way, in encounters alternately funny, troublesome and transcendent, he realises he’s finally on course toward rebuilding his life and family.

After we saw the film, my family all remarked on the music, so my partner gave me the CD for my birthday.
I have listened to it often, and like it a lot. I had not realized at first that the collection is in part a history
and sampler of Hawaiian music, but the more I read about it, the more interesting it was. I don't honestly have
a clue what "slack key" guitar is, but what these folks do with it is lovely. Don't worry, the association with
the film (which I also enjoyed, but you don't have to) is minimal - ie you don't associate tracks with film scenes.

Having been to see the excellent film I decided to buy the soundtrack. The Hawaiian theme is quite unique and is very soothing. I have the CD in my car auto-changer and listen to it often.

The soundtrack from The Descendants is beautiful, haunting... & REAL Hawaiian music. The artists included are truly some of Hawaiian music's greatest & most influential artists. MOM performed by Lena Machado [Lena Machado-Hawaiian Song Bird HOCD29000 Hana Ola Records]received two prestigious awards from the Hawaiian Academy of Recording Arts: 1998 Anthology of the Year & 1998 Liner Notes of the Year. Lena Machado was known as "Hawaii's Song Bird". Her lyric soprano voice delighted millions of people for almost half a century. Incomparable vocals, more than 60 lifetime compositions, & innovative arrangements influenced just about every Hawaiian falsetto singer after her. It was named one of Honolulu Magazine's 50 Greatest Hawaiian Albums. AUWE performed by Slack Key Master Ray Kane [The Legendary Ray Kane-Old Style Slack Key -HOCD52000 Hana Ola]produced by George Winston,had slack-key enthusiasts around the world drooling - this was the one they had been waiting for. The complete classic early recordings made by the legendary Ray Kane playing "old style" slack-key guitar. For his tireless work perpetuating & promoting slack-key he was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Folk Heritage Fellowship, America's highest honor for a traditional artist, & he was also awarded the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts. Ka Mele Oku U Pu Uwai is performed by Sol Hoopii's Novelty Trio [Sol Hoopii - King of the Hawaiian Steel Guitar- HOCD82000 Hana Ola]. Sol Hoopii is regarded as the foremost Hawaiian steel guitarist ever. No other steel guitar player has been emulated more around the world than Hoopii. He is considered a genius & possibly has the greatest picking hand of all time. His speed & dexterity have rarely been duplicated. He was known for his improvised blues like melodic ornaments, fast runs, syncopated rhythms, & various sound effects in chording & plucking. This recording represents his finest work from 1927 - 1936.

An introduction to the slack key tradition

This was a fantastic movie that seemed to only get better in the days after I watched it. It kind of slowly sunk in. A large part of what makes this a beautiful picture is the slack key masters featured throughout. I was not familiar with the musicians, but am thankful this movie helped me discover them. Bravo for a wonderful soundtrack and for showcasing this music so unique to Hawaii.

Hawaii No Ka Oe...

I have loved Hawaiian music for years...and have missed it since moving to the mainland long ago. This album brings together the best of the best...including Gabby and the Beamers. I love having this range of voices and music bundled in one album...brings me back to a moonlit night on the beach as I head into another New England winter. Saw the movie yesterday...a great job capturing the mood and feel of Hawaii thanks in large part to this soundtrack. I hope these artists get their due on the world stage.
