Review

'Knots are one of the currencies of wisdom, and there's nothing more impressive...'Knot Craft' is a gem.'
--sailers.co.uk (December 2009)

'This treasure trove of Des Pawson's personal rope craft recipes contains projects ranging from bellropes...to belts.'
--Fishing News (December 2009)

'Des gives step-by-step instructions on how to put these knots together...just as you would expect from a recipe book...and guidance as to how each project can be the starting point for many other items.'
--Practical Boat Owner (March 2010)

'Most knot enthusiasts aboard smacks and barges sneakily keep one of Des's books in their bunk...but owners of modern yachts will also warm to the knotty problems unlaced by Des, with useful and innovative applications of ropework.'
--Yachting Monthly (March 2010)

'Find projects ranging from fenders and mats to knife lanyards and belts along with background to many more projects.'
--Boat Mart (June 2010)

'opening windows into a craft unbeknown to many. While almost everyone must have tied a knot from time to time, this book takes the reader into a different and unusual world of knots.'
--Nautical Magazine, May 2010

'Des Pawson has dedicated these 96 pages to ambitious ropework, unlikely to be found in many other books. All are works of art with a practical purpose and some, such as rope fenders, could save you money.'
--Yachting Monthly, May 2011

"This shows the author as the quintessential English eccentric. Described as the "guru of knot tying", he is certainly different and this is what gives this book its abundant charm...An amazingly eclectic collection of useful, useless and often very attractive examples of ropework is clearly described." --Ausmarine Book Review (May 2011)

Product Description

This treasure trove of Des Pawson's personal ropecraft recipes contains projects ranging from bellropes, key fobs and fenders to mats, doorstops, knife lanyards and belts. The second edition has been expanded to include more of Des's enticing ropework projects. Along with fascinating tit bits of nautical history as background to the many projects, and guidance as to how they can be the starting point for many other items, Des gives step-by-step instructions on how to put these knots together to form the finished article, and provides advice on the size and lengths of the materials required - just as you would expect from a recipe book. With this book to hand, readers will have the confidence to start making desirable objects with knots because, as Des says, this is the book that makes all other knot books work! 'You'll certainly never look at a frayed off-cut of rope in quite the same way again.' Classic Boat 'A must' Waterways World 'A gem of a book' Canal Boat and Inland Waterways

Interesting book. Hoping to put it to good use during my forthcoming retirementin order to make several items for our narrow boat.

It was a gift 3 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
Fast service, received in plenty of time.

Husband likes it - it was on his wish list - so it's achieved its aim! I can't really comment much on the content but it's making him happy and he's into all things string and knotty.

Good info-not many project that aren't sailing related 5 Jan 2011
By L. Liefveld - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased this book online on the recommendation of a friend who teaches knot-tying and is, himself, an author of 2 knot-tying books. It was a Xmas gift for my granddaughter.

I reviewed the book, and it has very good information, the illustrations are easy to follow, and I would have been able to give it 5 stars, except that it appeared that the majority of the projects are related to boats and sailing. There are a couple of projects that she would be useful for a non-sailor/non-boater, and one or two that I think she could modify into something else that is practical or could be gifts.

It would have been great if this book had been one that you could look at the pages first. I ordered the book on Dec 8th, and it didn't arrive until Dec 24, so I really had to go ahead and give it to her. I hope she will still be able to use some of the projects.
Exactly what I was looking for! 30 July 2011

I have wanted to learn to make knotted boat fenders for many years. This book has shown me how to make several different types including one using a plastic fender as a base. I also made a nifty new pull for the ship's bell.
The explanations may be a bit difficult for the first-timer; but if you are familiar with marlinspike knots you'll be making great nautical items with just a bit of practice
