This is the story of King Kelson Haldane who assumes the throne at age 14, after witnessing his father's murder. Treachery surrounds the young king, as a Deryni sorceress challenges him for the throne. His only help is Morgan, a half Deryni chief advisor, who must help the boy assume his own sorcerer's powers. While the hostile regency council, led by the Church, which has presecuted the Deryni for 200 years, is trying to destroy Morgan. This is where the Deryni universe begins. It is Miss Kurtz's first novel in the series and it shows. This book is written more toward the adolesence than the adult reader. But from an embryonic start, the Deryni universe blossoms wonderfully in subsequent novels, as Miss Kurtz's writing skills improve dramatically.
Read this book for that very reason, it is just the beginning and things do get a lot better.

While Kurtz was definitely learning to sustain and flesh
out a plot, this book is still wonderfully satisfying. A
lovely, medieval world in which some people, the Deryni,
have extensive telepathic and empathic powers. A moving
examination of humanity and Catholicism. Even better,
Kurtz's talents develop rapidly in the sequels, making this
series a must read. Fabulous gifts!

Not a great start, but the saga gets a lot better
Following the death of his father King Brion Haldane, Kelson becomes the ruler of Gwynedd. As a 14-year-old he must fight not only his own inexperience, but conflicts on all sides. Read more

Excellent character development and realistic dialogue.
The book DERYNI RISING is an excellent read for people who enjoy fantasy books. The author develops characters incredibly well until the reader feels like he/she knows them. Read more

Be prepared to enjoy
