Further proof that folk isn't dead..., 31 Jan 2006
This is my first review of a music album, so bear with me for knowing little about music in general.I purchased this album from the record label itself (which is Invada) and hence why I've been able to review this before the actual release date, and I have to say it's really been worth the money. Some may know Joe Volk as the vocalist in Gonga, but if you're expecting music along those line, you're looking in the wrong place. This is folk music to begin with, so the heavy doom/stoner style is nowhere to be found, but unlike Gonga who have blended into the generic and forgotten, Joe Volk has produced an album alongside Adrian Utley which is inspiring to listen to. While it doesn't necessarily redefine the genre, it certainly upholds a high quality throughout whether that be the simple and catchy rhythm of 'The Sun Also Rises' through to the heartfelt and more complex 'Whole Pig, No Head' of which the latter is certainly one of those songs which you'll listen to on repeat. Whilst the lyrics certainly stand out due to Volk's unique voice, it's the guitar where the heart of this record is, giving you the ability to relax and lose yourself within the sound. The only downside is that this record will probably not sell well, thanks to the much lauded Jose Gonzalez. I implore you, if you enjoyed his record then you should definitely purchase this one, it's worth the effort. Tracklisting: 1. You, Running 2. The Sun Also Rises 3. Dwarf Minus 4. Thaumaturgist 5. Lanfranchis 6. Toecutter (Our Lady) 7. Farne 8. Watching The Crest 9. Whole Pig, No Head 10. This Vehicle Is Moving 11. The Weir Total running time: 45 minutes, 14 seconds
