Derwent Coloursoft Pencils

The Coloursoft pencils have a soft, velvety strip, the softest in the Derwent range, ideal for the quick and easy application of rich, dense, bold, vibrant colour. Despite this, Coloursoft sharpens to a fine point and can be used for a wide range of drawing styles, from bold landscapes to detailed illustrations, portraiture and fashion design.

Soft, Wide, Blendable Colour Strips

The pencils wide colour strip makes them ideal for laying down solid blocks of intense colour quickly. The colour strength can be varied from faint and delicate to bold and intense by increasing or decreasing pressure on the page. The pencils enhanced formulation makes them highly blendable, allowing a range of subtly different tones to be created. They can also be used over a watercolour wash for depth of colour and subtle shading. The Derwent Blender pencil can help blend two or more colours together, softening and smoothing the colour on the paper.

Ideal for Broad, Sweeping Strokes

The tin contains 24 colours from the Coloursoft range. The rounded barrel is ideal for broad, sweeping strokes and the pencils are easy to sharpen and break resistant, making them ideal for long periods of use.

The softness, richness, blendability, and opacity of these pencils means that I can now continue using my Berol Karismas without fear of finishing them too soon. These Coloursoft pencils were first developed to replace the Karismas, which won the hearts of most people who used them, and they've done the job. I'm sorry I didn't take the plunge with them earlier. I bought the 24 colour tin as a tester while toying with the idea of buying Prismacolors from the US but now I can go for the 72 colour tin of these and avoid the US postage.

As usual with the Derwent range, even in small 12 pencil tins, the range of colours is carefully chosen and suitable for mixing a fairly full colour wheel. These pencils also work very well other brands and other Derwent pencils.

These pencils are soft and capable of achieving bold, deep colours. Excellent blending qualities. Not to be compared in any way with cheap colouring pencils bought from the stationers or supermarket. For carrying around I also bought the roll-up case Derwent Pencil Wrap.

I got brought a box of Derwent coloured pencils for Christmas 2011. Since then I have got heavily into coloured pencils as an illustration tool and have constantly added to them since. I now own over 200 in all. I've tried other brands, notably Faber and there's little to choose between them. To be honest, if anything, the Faber pencils have the edge, but they are a lot more costly than the Derwent and I'm quite happy with Coloursoft here for most colouring. So pleased that this purchase is my second box this year as I wore out most of the first already.

If you buy these, as with most pencils note that the blending works best when you lightly colour rather than scrubbing hard.

is what it says on the tin and they are exactly that.

I was a bit apprehensive about spending a lot of money on some artists pencils but having done a lot of research on the different types by Derwent and other arty brands, I decided to settle for this set. The texture is extremely soft on the paper and the teeth (at least I think that's what they call it) shows through like crayon on paper. Having said that, they do give an intense colour when you add layers or apply firmer pressure. You can use a blending stump with them to give a smoother look and mix colours together to produce new hues.

Although they are very soft, you can sharpen to a fine point for detailed work but beware, I sharpened one too much and it broke sometime between use.

So far, I have used them to draw two butterflies but I'm pleased with the results. You can look at the art gallery on the Derwent website to see what they're capable of producing. They produce particularly striking results when used on black paper.

All in all, this is a very versatile set of pencils that I would highly recommend for those serious about their art and I'm very pleased with this product.

I wanted a simple to get out and put away art form, so looked for some quality coloured pencils. After watching vids and reading reviews, I decided upon the Coloursoft and bought the 24 set as and introductory set.

Very impressed by the soft, luminous colours. They're a little lacking on the browns and greys if you do lots of animal portraits. To complement this set, I bought the Derwent Drawing set which has muted tones, thereby providing an all round batch of colour.

Yes they are nice pencils, soft, good colour and coverage but.... why is there only one red? It seems to be the thing with a lot of pencil sets that there are loads of shades of greens, blues, browns (understandable) and greys(really don't get that one) but the red is only one or two shades and are more often than not, more orange than red, there is just the one red in this set and is more orangey than crimson/scarlet/cranberry/wine/blood red
