DVD Description

On the Derren Brown – Trick Of The Mind Series 2 DVD, the award-winning Derren Brown returns with more tricks of the mind, combining psychology and showmanship with ambitious visual stunts and celebrity guest appearances. In this series, Derren takes his unique show out into the regions where dark stunts abound--such as a zombie arcade game equipped with subliminal messaging, which transports a young lad to a real-life version of the game. This DVD includes celebrity appearances by Jonathan and Jane Ross, Simon Pegg, Mo Mowlam, Iain Banks, Richard Madeley and Alistair McGowan.

Synopsis

Psychological boundaries are ambitiously stretched on the Derren Brown – Trick Of The Mind Series 2 DVD, as Derren asks people for directions on Blackpool Pier and, with his power of suggestion, convinces the total strangers to hand over their wallet and keys!

Even better than before 25 April 2011
Having reviewed the first series, I mentioned there that this series was better. Whilst the first series was brilliant, it relied too much on repeated routines. This series gets rid of that repetition and aims to give quality and longer-length routines in each episode to give the outstanding series a sign of progression.

There are also less errors. Having watched Derren many times, reading him like a little demented psychic, it has emerged when he makes mistakes and he is deliberately making mistakes to affect the attitude the participant(s). It is much to his credit that he doesn't, like many similar performers, edit his show (which he easily could) to cover these up. I still have the utmost respect for him broadcasting the casino special which didn't work in his favour.

Whilst I felt that the first series had strong and weak routines, this series is much more consistent in its excellence. Every routine in this series is very strong. The 'in-between' routines which fill in the gaps between the big attractions and celebrity appearances have much more variety. He also dispenses with the telephone hypnosis which book-ended each episode of the first series. This became an annoyance for me after a while, especially watching them back to back on DVD.

Highlights in this series are; Jonathan/Jane Ross card trick, staring competition, Zombie game (on par with his specials), the mind reading booth (always tickles me), word choice, mo mowlam newspaper article and the word counting.

Excellent stuff, you must buy this.

Derren is brilliant as usual and I really enjoyed watching the DVD and the opportunity to watch it again and again. I loved the bit with Jonathan Ross and his absolutely gorgeous wife Jane. And why do I suddenly want a red BMX for Christmas? No more than 3 stars though because the content is exactly the same cut as that shown on TV. There are a couple of voice over behind the scene discussions recorded but I expected more. More video of the build up, the actual 'trick' and comment from Derren on what we had seen and heard. Artists and DVD producers need to put more into their productions than what people can get direct from TV, then I'd be happy to part with more of my money.
