More About the Author

Hailing from Essex, Gary graduated from Harrow College (University of Westminster) with a degree in Illustration in 1992. After discovering the hidden world of small press comics, he took the plunge with his own comics creating various titles such as "Great!", "Little Box of Comics" and "Stupidmonsters".

In 2002 he jumped head-first into the deep end of children's publishing with the position of in-house illustrator at Eaglemoss Publications, working for five years on projects such as Horrible Histories, Horrible Science and The Magical World Of Roald Dahl.

From February 2004 his strip Derek The Sheep began appearing regularly in the Beano. Derek is the Beano's first and only creator-owned property. In 2008 a collection of Derek the Sheep stories was published by Bloomsbury and in France as Norbert Le Mouton, by L'edition de L'an 2.

He has since written and drawn popular comic strips for many top notch publications including The Dandy and The DFC and currently knocks out regular strips for the brilliant Phoenix Comic Weekly in the form of Gary's Garden, plus an award winning monthly comic strip for National Geographic Kids UK.

He has a brand new children's graphic novel called The Terrible Tales of the Teenytinysaurs out from Walker books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid entertainment 25 Sep 2008
By ROBK
Format:Hardcover
I first encountered Derek in The Beano. I began asking my kids if Derek was in, every time they got a copy. He wasn't in every week and it became a rare treat. I detected a humour which worked on a few levels beyond that of a children's cartoon strip. It appealed to me massively. Derek is the work of a craftsman. Gary Northfield (the writer / illustrator) makes the 'adventures' wholesome for anyone, by injecting great sublime humour, social satire and a genuine endearment for Derek and his other supporting characters. All are fleshed out perfectly in daft innocent tales of rural life that are a real joy to read. Ideal for children and adults alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mental and totally fabulous! 1 May 2009
Format:Hardcover
This book is the funniest thing ever! Gary Northfield is a brilliant storyteller, does a gag-a-minute and has a lovely, loose way of drawing that makes everything look lovely and totally nuts at the same time. I'd recommend this for kids and adults alike, and great to give as a gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outrageous ovine action 14 Dec 2009
Format:Hardcover
Derek is a cheeky Cockney (his "flippin' 'ecks" and "bloomin' worms" and the ever present "Oi!" put his field squarely within bleating distance of some smoke-filled East End pub) ball of woolly nuttiness and you can't help but love him.

He is crazy, kooky, sometimes rather smelly and utterly endearing all at once. The stories are simple, Englishly charming and pleasingly deranged, showing shades of all manner of English comedy classics from Only Fools to Carry On to Eddie Izzard and beyond.

The animals inhabitants of Derek's little green world express unexpected degrees of thoughts and feelings through their bug eyes and goofy-toothed expressions (marvel at the line up of animal hair pride in the Bad Hair Day story and go "Aww[...]" at the tragic sorrow of friendless Cecil the Bee in Let's Bee Friends). But Derek steals the show with his nutcase attempts to stand out from the rest of the flock gently herding you from mild giggles to the inevitable HA! at the end.

It's a completely lovely and hilarious book.

One small sheep for Gary Northfield, one giant herd of sheepfilled brilliance for comic kind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome but nuts 16 April 2009
Format:Hardcover
A great collection of work... suitably nutty and irreverent. Great for kids but a worthy piece for childish adults. I love Gary's colours and free, bustling line work. A really well produced funny book that gives Shaun the Sheep a run for his money...

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious stuff 9 Sep 2008
Format:Hardcover
This is a fantastic collection of Derek the Sheep comic strips from the Beano. Derek was about long before Shaun the Sheep made the big time - an incredible injustice!
Gary Northfields images and sense of humour in these tales are second to none and the imaginative stories make you laugh more with every read.
I hope to see more from this amazing author - great stuff.
