Book Description

1 Sep 2008 Beano
A day in the life of Derek the Sheep is no forage in the field. Oh no. It's flippin' hard work, what with all those other pesky animals on the farm! Wherever Derek might be or whatever he might be up to, you can be sure there's something for him to get his wool in a twist about. But the cantankerous Derek is also not one to miss an opportunity - especially if it means more juicy grass - and brought here are a collection of some of Derek's most heroically daft adventures to be enjoyed time and again by one and all.

About the Author

Gary Northfield graduated from Harrow College (University of Westminster) with a degree in Illustration in 1992. After graduation, he discovered the hidden world of small press (home-made) comics. Finally Gary took the plunge with his own comics in 1999, sporadically creating various titles such as "Great!", "Little Box of Comics" and "Stupidmonsters". He acquired the position of in-house illustrator at Eaglemoss Publications in 2002, working on magazines such as Horrible Histories, Horrible Science and The Magical World of Roald Dahl. Gary has been writing and drawing Derek the Sheep for DC Thomson's The Beano since late 2003.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid entertainment 25 Sep 2008
By ROBK
Format:Hardcover
I first encountered Derek in The Beano. I began asking my kids if Derek was in, every time they got a copy. He wasn't in every week and it became a rare treat. I detected a humour which worked on a few levels beyond that of a children's cartoon strip. It appealed to me massively. Derek is the work of a craftsman. Gary Northfield (the writer / illustrator) makes the 'adventures' wholesome for anyone, by injecting great sublime humour, social satire and a genuine endearment for Derek and his other supporting characters. All are fleshed out perfectly in daft innocent tales of rural life that are a real joy to read. Ideal for children and adults alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mental and totally fabulous! 1 May 2009
Format:Hardcover
This book is the funniest thing ever! Gary Northfield is a brilliant storyteller, does a gag-a-minute and has a lovely, loose way of drawing that makes everything look lovely and totally nuts at the same time. I'd recommend this for kids and adults alike, and great to give as a gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome but nuts 16 April 2009
Format:Hardcover
A great collection of work... suitably nutty and irreverent. Great for kids but a worthy piece for childish adults. I love Gary's colours and free, bustling line work. A really well produced funny book that gives Shaun the Sheep a run for his money...
