Amazon.co.uk Review

With a nasty villain and a plot twist that will take many viewers by surprise, Derailed is the kind of potboiler that's enjoyable in spite of its flaws. It's basically two-thirds of a good movie, with a convincing set-up and a barely plausible payoff that... well, you've just got to see it and decide for yourself. Like Fatal Attraction, it's a good-enough thriller that turns infidelity into every man's nightmare, beginning when Charles (Clive Owen), a well-to-do Chicago advertising director with a sickly, diabetic daughter and a slightly troubled marriage, has a chance encounter with Lucinda (Jennifer Aniston), a lovely and quick-witted financial advisor who's also stuck in a marital rut. Their chemistry is instant (between both characters and stars), but their eventual hotel tryst is interrupted by a mugger (French actor Vincent Cassel at his vile, despicable best) who's out to milk Charles for every dollar he's got. Of course, one phone call to the police would solve everyone's problems, but as he did with Collateral (albeit more convincingly), screenwriter Stuart Beattie turns up the tension with such manipulative skill that you're willing to skate past the plot holes and go along for the ride. With lively supporting performances by rappers Xzibit and RZA, Derailed marks a commercially slick American debut for Swedish director Mikael Håfström, whose 2003 thriller Evil was a Best Foreign Film Oscar-nominee. --Jeff Shannon

It's lured, melodramatic and violent, it defies logic, and you really have to suspend disbelief at most of what you are watching, but Derailed is a serviceable, quite exciting genre thriller that hits all the right notes and is mostly worth watching for the sexy chemistry between Clive Owen and Jennifer Anniston. Thriller fans will enjoy this movie, as it has a slick, polished sensibility and a plot that just races along, but don't expect it to be without fault.

Charles Schine (Clive Owen) is having a rough time lately. Charles and his wife Deanna (Melissa George) are stressed in their marriage. Both have been working constantly to save extra cash for their ailing daughter who has Type 1 Diabetes requiring her to have a home dialysis machine and undergo other expensive treatments. One confusing morning, after leaving home Charles forgets to take enough money to pay for his train fare.

Lucky though, there is the generous and sexy yuppyish Financial Advisor Lucinda Harris (Jennifer Anniston) to buy a ticket for him. Soon they develop a train riding relationship, and benign pleasantries turn into having lunch, which turns into drinks after work. The accelerated flirtation eventually culminates in attempted infidelity. Soon they find themselves making out and going to a seedy hotel for a secret romp.

Their tryst is thwarted when a French-accented thug breaks into their room and enacts, with theatrical relish, the worst nightmare of guilt-ridden, well-heeled adulterers. Blaming the whole thing on getting mugged Charles tries to put it behind him when he gets a call at home from his attacker, Philippe Laroche (Vincent Cassel), who begins a game of blackmail needing $20,000 or things will be taken further.

Directed by Mikael Håfström from a vaguely familiar screenplay by Stuart Beattie, the film ushers in every twist and turn with a kind of unsubtle foreboding, but that's half the fun of the movie. The shocks and plot twists come with a shocking intensity with Håfström accomplishing the difficult task of making Owen seem ineffectual and lumpish and Anniston sharp and grim, he's also made Vincent Cassel's slick, versatile, multilingual arch-villain LaRoche improbably florid and cartoonish.

Rather than nail its characters to the bed they've made, Derailed spins off into reprehensible mastermind territory, all the while slogging through a predictable rehash of the cinematic dangers of cheating on your wife - especially if you happen to be an upper-middle-class executive, your wife a gorgeous blond schoolteacher and your daughter a vulnerable, sickly waif whose fourth kidney transplant you've scrimped and saved for.

Yet the film is always compelling, and imminently watchable and it's interesting seeing Owen and Anniston together; they have the type of relationship that achieves a pulpy, darkly driven passionate intensity that commands an equally hammering denouement for them both. Mike Leonard March 06.

This film was slated by the critics but I learnt long ago not to take a blind bit of notice of what the `experts' say about a movie because more often than not I disagree with their synopsis. Which is why I watched this movie with no preconceptions at all. I knew the part Jennifer Aniston was going to play would be a huge departure from the `girl-next-door' image and I was intrigued to see how she'd pull it off. My opinion: she pulled it off pretty darn well!

I really enjoyed this film and feel it's one of the better films of 2006 so far. I'd describe it as a thriller with a twist and would recommend it to fans of Jennifer Aniston purely so they can see her play a part far removed from what we're used to seeing her do. I was really impressed by her performance and think Clive Owen played the part of Charles to perfection. This was a fast paced movie which will give those who've thought of having an affair pause for thought as it shows why you should never cross some lines.....

Good solid film 8 May 2007

I really enjoyed this film and didn't see the twist coming in it till later on in the film. Clive Owen was superb as the lead, although his character was a bit annoying. I'm a huge fan of Jennifer Aniston and she played her role pretty convincingly, although way off from being an oscar performance! Altogether a great film
