Product Description

From the Publisher

The classic English edition of the cautionary tales.
The classic English edition of the cautionary tales for children, including the original colour artwork by Dr. Heinrich Hoffmann. "Graphically one of the most beautiful books in the world." - Maurice Sendak --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

Heinrich Hoffmann (1809-1894), a doctor in his native Frankfurt (where there is a museum devoted to his work), often told funny stories to put his young patients at their ease. Frustrated by the moralistic tone of contemporary children's books, he wrote and illustrated this picture book as a Christmas present for his three-year-old son, and it has delighted and terrified generations since. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

I was first mesmerised and terrified by Dr. Heinrich Hoffman's cautionary tales as a seven year old. Reading the book as an adult brought back the thrill of seeing the disobedient, rude and stupid recieve their just punishment in such gory and vivid detail. The original 5 colour illustrations enrich the experience further. Hoffman's tales are on a par with Roald Dahl's "Revolting Rhymes", but much darker and scarier. Read them at your peril!

This is a wonderful book I remembered from my childhood. With stories of naughty children and the possible consequences of being naughty. It has great illustrations which are let down by this very small version, four times smaller than the one I owned.
Still a good book but since the illustrations are so vital, left feeling seriously disappointed by its size. Marked down for this reason.

This is a great book and I would highly recommend it. It is full of wonderful morality tales in rhyming form for children. It is beautifully illustrated with cautionary tales for thumb-sucking soup refusing children.
Both my nine year old and three year old love it.

My brother was given this book as a child way back in the 70's - it left a lasting impression - and certainly stopped my brother sucking his thumb!

Now as a mum, I have spoken to my children about the book that was designed to scare kids rigid into behaving, and might just give you nightmares. They were intrigued, so I decided to see if it was still available, or whether political correctness had caused it to disappear without trace.

Now thrilled that I can share the horrors of the book with them!

My daughter is called Harriet, so she, especially, knows not to play with matches. The boys know that if you refuse to eat your dinner, you could be dead within the week; and of course they are so happy that they never have to watch out for the Scissor Man .... snip snap snip snap!

Does this make me a bad parent?!!

This is an extremely good edition of the book that I loved as a child. It frightened me a bit then but I still remember it fondly and I will happily read it to my son when he is old enough. It takes more than this to frighten kids these days. Good value for money.

I had this book originally when I was a child in Germany and was really fascinated by it but eventually it got lost. Beautiful book and great stories with morals. Could be scary for very young children but then I bought it for myself and my children who are in their twenties! Fascinating book and also now available in English - I'm going to purchase the translated copy too. A book to be browsed through again and again.

I grew up on these stories and my children have too. My son of 25 was talking to me about it recently and so I bought this copy for him and the next generation. Do's and don't s for children. Dark tales beautifully illustrated in its original format. The story of cruel Fredrick, Little Johnny head in air, Harriet and the matches, the story of little sucker thumb and many more. Its the best.
