I gave this product a four star rating because it filled all the requirements stated pre-purchase. I live in Australia, so this did take a fair amount of time to get to me but that is completely understandable and, again, it arrived within the stated estimations. The great thing about this book is that I have been able to use it as a tool for furthering my study in German language. Moreover, I love the English version anyway and have enjoyed reading this book in German. In addition, because of it's size I've been able to carry it about with me during the day and when I've had a spare hour or two, it's been useful to fill the time reading it wherever I might be. There's nothing I can say with regards to disliking the product. Definitely a recommendation for anyone who is a German, language student and knows The Hobbit well already. It would be interesting to see what a native speaker thought of the translation but I personally feel it has been translated well.

In Germany we have a thing called Buchpreisbindung, so you are not allowed to sell books below the price you have to sell it for. It's a very important tool to preserve a variety of books in Germany. So I felt kind of bad to buy this book in Britain.

I was a bit disappointed because there is not the bonus material in this issue that I was looking for, e. g. a letter Tolkien wrote to the Germans in 1937 or 1938? He explained things like his name coming from the German word tollkuehn, which means brave.

Actually I prefer The Lord of the Rings, but that one costs about 300 Euro in the leather bound edition.

There are illustrations by Tolkien in the book and a fold out map. The quality of this edition is beautiful! It's a real treasure!

Sorry for my very German English. I try to get better. Cheers. ☺

decent translation, still a great book. 10 April 2007
By P. Horton - Published on Amazon.com

I must admit at the outset that I haven't finished reading the German translation yet (I'm referring to the paperback here), but so far it's as fun a read as the English. I've had a couple minor issues with the translation so far, but they're fairly trivial and may be perfectly justified by parts farther on in the book.

I really enjoy reading English-language books in translation (from Watership Down to Red Dragon) and have also read a good deal of German lit in English, and as translations go this seems to have lost little of the "feel" of Tolkien. That means it can be both dense and playful at once without being tiring. A masterful "Erzählung" in any language (that I can read, at least)!

Enjoyable, but very abridged 6 Feb 2011
By M. Wolfe - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
I bought 'Der Kleine Hobbit' in Stuttgart to help me retain my German. I purchased this 'sonderausgabe' (special edition) audio book so I don't forget what German sounds like. It absolutely serves that purpose. However, it is abridged which makes it difficult to follow along in the text which is how I reinforce my German usage. Someone who wants to enjoy Der Hobbit and not spend the additional time of listening through an unabridged edition will do well to buy this version. If you want an audio rendition of the entire text, I would recommend looking elsewhere. It is produced with very solid production values and is certainly enjoyable and the passages it skips past do not harm the overall intregity of Tolkien's story. If you are an avid Tolkien fan who wants to explore his text in German, this may not be the right choice for you; but if you just want to spend some time listening to a quality rendition, this does the job.

Same Great Story, Great New Way to Learn 18 Jun 2009
By Dragon Quill - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
As a student of the fabulous German language, but also as a fanatical Fantasy fan, a translation of The Hobbit proved the perfect way to practice my German, all while enjoying one of the best adventure stories ever written.

The familiarity of the storyline and a general knowledge of how the story is supposed to go allows one who is not entirely fluent in German to navigate the text fairly easily. One might say, however, that this is true of any popular story one reads in a foreign language... but that is unfortunately not true.

Take Harry Potter, which I own in German, but which does not help me at all. Rowling's writing style is sparser and blunter (neither a good nor bad thing) than Tolkien's, and thus while reading Sorcerer's Stone, I found myself reading what I knew *should* have been there rather than absorbing new words and understanding how the language works.

This translation of The Hobbit, by contrast, doesn't afford one the luxury of just skimming over the words and thinking up the words that should have been there. There simply isn't enough dialogue to make that happen.

As for the quality of the translation itself, I can't really speak. Is it as good as the English version? Naturally not. Very few texts are better in translation. However, none of the fun of this adventure story is lost.

So better your German...the Hobbit way.

Bought 4 CD set, only got 2 CDS 18 Mar 2014
By Valerie Figg - Published on Amazon.com

I was so excited to get this audio book. I've studied German for 6 years and wanted to keep up on audio comprehension after spending 6 months abroad in Germany. I've read the Hobbit in English and saw the first new movie in English and German, and therefore I was really looking forward to getting this CD set.
However, it was only available from European countries, which meant the shipping took about 3 weeks. To my dismay, the seller only sent me CDs 3 and 4! I quickly contacted them, asking whether the first 2 CDs were shipped separately and on their way or whether there was some mistake. Within the next day, I recieved and email saying they had refunded my purchase price because I was unhappy with the product, and they were very sorry. It was nice of them, but that really did not clear the problem. I did NOT want a refund, I wanted CDs 1 and 2!!!

So I've had to reorder the entire set from a different seller- and of course the price has gone up $2! And I haven't been able to test out the CDs I do have, because I have to desire to jump into the story right in the middle (even though I know how the story goes). Hoping for the best
