Product Description

Product Description

It is estimated that there are about 1000 new cases of postnatal depression in Britain every week. The results can be devastating not only to the mother herself, but also to her partner, family, friends. In its most extreme form it can lead to infanticide or suicide. Depression after Childbirth is THE classic text on postnatal depression, one that countless women have found invaluable in helping them understand and cope with this devastating disorder. Now in print for over 20 years, and in its 4th edition, the text has been extensively updated, and includes many new chapters drawing on the latest scientific findings. Included are new chapters on careers and motherhood, coping with stress, a look at the role the partner can play, and the effects on them of PND, and a chapter examining maternal behaviour in animals. The result is a book that will be essential for many women and those around them in helping them through this difficult period.

Science: yes Help: no 26 Sep 2007
Format:Paperback
If you have a desperate need to know why, then this book has a lot of science, which always helps you to understand what's happening, so long as you have a science degree (luckily I have, but that's beside the point). At the beginning there is a list of 28 figures, the most esoteric of which must be: 10, The formulae for progesterone, norethisterone, and testosterone. Despite being a molecular biologist, knowing the molecular formulae for the hormones involved does not stop you crying because you're lonely, bored and hate your life. I think it might be useful for the professionals to read, but don't expect any hands-on real help.

I wanted a scientific explanation into what the causes are of PND. This book puts forward the argument that PND can be treated with progerterone and explains this clearly & effectively. I have read in other books that progesterone is used to prevent treat PND & has a 100% success rate (the NHS direct website also say progesterone is becoming more widely used in the treatment of the illness). This book is reccommended to all those who are looking for a less basic book on PND. A brilliant insight.

So informative 14 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
This book was so helpful, enabling me to have a greater understanding and appreciation of how PND impacts both the mum and family. For me, the benefits the book gave far outweighed the cost (£30.10).
It gives lots of detail about recognising PND, when it is likely to occur and how to support the mum yourself as well as the other professionals that are able to give help. I learned so much about how fear can incapacitate. The book has facts about how hormones affect the mum during preganancy and after the birth - some of this I found a bit beyond what I needed, however, these chapters can be left out without it being detrimental to the reader.
I found this book easy to read, not just giving knowledge, but I feel that the information and greater understanding I have gained will enable me as a Maternity Nurse to support my families more effectively.
It's not a book for the mum who is currently suffering from PND, but more for those who are looking to improve their knowledge and understanding in recognising and supporting mums and their families.
