Product Description

Product Description

For anyone concerned with post natal depression, male or female, this revised and enlarged book, reflects the substantial developments that have occured in recent years and aims to provide a greater understanding of the suffering that it causes to the mother, her baby and family. Above all it will help mothers to recognize their own symptoms and seek the correct treatment. Drawing on many case histories from her own controversial but dramatically successful work, the author attacks the popular idea that postnatal depression is caused by a combination of sleeplessness, lack of outside contacts, and loss of independence. She argues that a cure will be achieved only when it is recognized for what it is - a hormonal change that occurs in a woman's body after childbirth. The recent recognition of the function of progesterone receptors in the limbic area of the midbrain is highlighted in this book as well as the evidence of successful use of progesterone in preventing a recurrence of postnatal deporession. This book is also aimed at social workers and GPs.

I am writing a post graduate dissertation on post natal depression so thought this book would offer a good insight into the difficulties faced by women. I have never read such a load of unsubstantiated rubbish in my entire life. This woman makes blinding generalisations about women suffering PND. She suggests that the symptoms include constantly drinking tea and lazing around on the sofa without make-up on!!! I can't believe Katherina Dalton has any experience of motherhood if she imagines new mothers have the time to laze around. More seriously this book places the blame for PND squarely upon the shoulders of women and would offer a vulnerable mother feeling guilty and isolated absolutely no comfort at all!!!

Dr. Dalton give the true reason for PPD. She understands that PPD is a physical disorder of the hormones rather than a mood disorder that psychiatrists treat with suppressive drugs and electroshock. My sister had severe PPD. If I had had this book, I could have saved her life. Instead, she was put on drugs that actually made the problem worse. Dr. Dalton has respect for women and their unique hormonal biology and gives real answers to very important questions.
