If you have yet to be introduced to Depeche Mode, this release presents a fantastic opportunity to sample the evolution of one of the most innovative and unique bands. Whilst dedicated fans(such as I)may be slightly irritated by the release of tracks held in many formats and previous releases, this has clearly been released to allow a younger generation exposure to their music....and as many current cool bands such as Keane etc., cite DM as one of their prime influences, any one enjoying powerful electronics, thumping anthems mixed with sensitive, emotional atmospherics should buy this.
If you like Leftfield, The Prodigy etc - this is the band that shaped their sound. Oh, and you've probabaly heard most of this collection without realising it's Depeche Mode - Sky and others are big users of their music on clips/adverts etc.
Depeche Mode has sold in excess of 70 million albums worldwide, have been around for 26 years and still sell millions of albums upon release. They also sell out on gruelling worldwide tours - and what a live show they offer!
The 'volume one' speaks volumes - it's clear the band feel they'll not be able to complete a singles 98 > ?? due to their solo projects and, er, the fact they are indeed getting on a bit - so a 'greatest hits' collection offers another route than the chronologically ordererd single releases albums favoured in the past.
If you are pondering buying this, let me leave you with one thought. Whenever I meet someone who 'thinks' they dislike DM, I burn them a selection of their tracks. I've yet to meet anyone who didn't have their eyes opened and become an admirer. I'd strongly recommend this to anyone.
