Produced in 1968 by ITC (The Prisoner, The Saint), DEPARTMENT S was a departure from most other mystery programs. With its intriguing adventure & off beat stories, the series was a forerunner to contemporary programs like The X Files & Jonathan Creek which take the premise of an illogical occurrence, proceed to dissect each case, leading to a fascinating & rational conclusion. The series made an international star of its leading man (Peter Wyngarde), voted by Australian women in 1971 as the world's sexiest man, leading him to his own spin off series - JASON KING.

5.0 out of 5 stars Department S 4 Jun 2011
By Miss M. Potter TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
Department S was another successful series from ITC. It was made in 1969. It is a really good series and this is a fabulous DVD set of the entire series.

Department S is the Paris based secret wing of Interpol. The international police force. They undertake assignments that baffle regular detectives and government agents alike. In the team there is the rakish Jason King who is a thriller novelist. He helps to solve the riddle of the case by putting himself in the shoes of his fictional character Mark Caine. The equally perceptive American character Stewart Sullivan joins him. He often scoffs at the wild theories of Jason king. Also on the team is Annabelle Hurst, an attractive computer buff with an eye for detail. Their head of section is Oxbridge educated Sir Curtis Seretse.
The team investigates unusual cases such as the opening episode when an airliner returns after being lost for six days. All of the crew and passengers believe they have only been in the air for a few hours and have no other memory than the flight. The cases require a lot of lateral thinking.
All of the characters are good. And it is clear that the original idea was to copy the same formula as previous ITC shows by having an American actor in the cast to help make the show appealing to the American audience when ITC would try to sell the product to the US. And in the first few episodes the American character has strong presence. But as the series develops the more interesting, unusual and original character of the English Jason King becomes much more of the focus of attention. So much so that after Department S the character gets his own spin off series "Jason King".

This British TV show is excellent and it is very entertaining. The DVD set has some good extra special features and the whole product is highly recommended.

One of the best sets I have bought in a long time. This is the 7 Disc remastered Australian version. The Uk version just has 8 discs but in my experience you only watch the show and little of the extras. The show is dated, Un PC, fantastic fashions (hats off to Mr Wyngard aka Jason King) and plot lines that where quite clearly written by people smoking too many herbal 'Jazz' cigarettes!
