In a secret supernatural battle that's been raging for over a century, the stakes have just been raised – and they're not wooden anymore.

When Jamie Carpenter's mother is kidnapped by strange creatures, he finds himself dragged into Department 19, the government's most secret agency.

Fortunately for Jamie, Department 19 can provide the tools he needs to find his mother, and to kill the vampires who want him dead. But unfortunately for everyone, something much older is stirring, something even Department 19 can't stand up against…

About the Author

Before quitting his job in publishing to write Department 19, Will Hill worked as a bartender, a bookseller and a door-to-door charity worker. He grew up in the north-east of England, is scared of spiders, and is a big fan of cats. He lives in east London with his girlfriend, where he splits his time between staring out of the window and staring at a computer screen. The latter tends to be more productive.

4.0 out of 5 stars Action-packed vampire fantasy for teens 4 Feb 2011
By Discerning TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Fourteen year old Jamie's life changes irrevocably as he is plunged into the secret world of Department 19, a.k.a. Blacklight and finds out his family's connection to it. Plenty of drama and slayings. Although another book based on the eternally (!) popular vampire theme, I felt that this book will appeal equally to boys and girls for a change because it incorporates high-tech gadgetry, lots of action, has just a touch of romance and is written from a male point of view. I am not sure that the Frankenstein element helped draw the reader into the story but overall it was very readable considering the age group that it is aimed at. I would recommend this for older teens due to the graphic description of some killings and the horror.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vampire Fiction without the Sparkle! 3 Jan 2012
Format:Hardcover
Finally, a book with Vampires being downright evil, full of violence, gore and action. Department 19 is an altogether more grown-up horror/action title, and pulls away excellently from the Young Adult market's existing Vampire Romance titles, with an extra dash of classic literature and historical settings and references to add to the plots depth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sceptical at the start but stunned at the end. 27 Sep 2012
By David C
Format:Paperback
When I first heard about this book, I was sceptical. I wasn't sure if I would like this book that was supposedly a "teen fiction" book about Vampires. But... Don't be put off by this book, it's fantastic. Really surprised me with how good it was.
The vampires are the proper, rip-your-throat-out kind of vampires who would happily kill you without a moments hesitation. Kind of like the vampires from 30 Days of Nights. The story is fantastic and the premise that Dracula wasn't a horror story but a factual story is genius. The story involves a teenage boy,Jamie Carpenter whose Dad worked for a secret government agency that worked to eliminate the vampire race. The agency was set up by the major characters from the book Dracula and one of Jamie's Dad's friend is Frankenstein(Suspend disbelief as the character works really well and isn't your typical brainless monster Frankenstein but a Colonel in Department 19). The main vampires in the book are the 3 generals of Count Dracula's army when he was mad Vlad Tepes, the Rusmanovs and the story kicks off when one of the 3 vampires, Alexandru, abducts Jamie's mother as revenge for his Dad killing Alexandru's wife. The book will have you hooked throughout its many twists and turns before it reaches its breath-takingly stunning and shocking climax.

In summary, don't be put off the by the thought of a teen book about vampires. I wouldn't even classify this book as a "teen" book. Yes,it's main character is a teenager but the level of gore by the vampires and the very clever use of the classic stories "Dracula" and "Frankenstein" make this book more adult and truly fantastic. It's the first book in years that I have read that had me emotionally invested in the outcome of all the main characters. Don't hesitate, get this bought.

5.0 out of 5 stars So Cool!! 24 Jan 2012
Format:Hardcover
I borrowed the book out of my school library, a week ago, and I still think about it at night!!! It was an amazing book, it just does not let you go. Stayed up all night reading it, and even now, I know it's silly, but I'm checking my ceiling for vampires! It's about a boy called Jamie whose mother is taken by vampires, and his only hope of getting her back is to join Department 19, the governments best kept secret. The fight vampires and guard the ones they catch so no one will ever find out about them unless the too are in Department 19. It was a little confusing as it kept switching between time periods, but on the whole an amazing book! I'm twelve and I found it really captivating. A really epic book! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Bad Ass Vampires and more! 30 Mar 2011
Format:Hardcover
I actually won this book on twitter via the charming Sawart Chadda who had an ARC and was giving it away in a mini contest and I was told that 'If you want bad-ass vampires, it's the book for you.' If that's not an invitation to get excited then I don't know what is!

The book, based on the cover and the plot, will probably be targeted at YA male readers but don't let that put you off girls. This book will appeal to everyone with it's wicked use of cool locations, awesome horror action and battles and plus some fantastic and inspired ways of taken classic novels and bringing forward their stories for a new and younger generation. I have read Frankenstein and Dracula whilst studying at University and if anything Department 19 will encourage young readers to take a closer look at these classic horrors and re think what they know about stories like Frankenstein and the common misconceptions of Gothic horror.

This book is awesome. It is an excellent addition to any Horror collection and perfect introduction for young readers to the more Classics.

This is a straight out horror action packed tale of Jamie who discovers his father has a past within the secret British government agency known as Department 19. Department 19 doesn't exist to the general public but it fights the supernatural evils and defends against the monsters that you think are scary stories. Jamie is thrown into a world he never knew existed after his mother is kidnapped by one of the oldest vampires in existence who is out for evil doing and destruction.
