I was really pleased with this book. It has a great mix of appliqué and patchwork based designs all with traditional roots that have been presented in a really modern way. There are several designs that I will be taking forward and as each pattern has a list of the fabrics used they could be recreated easily. The back of the book also has a fold out paper pattern.

There is some beautiful photography that when combined with the history of the pattern makes it a good read too.

I have only been quilting for the the last couple of years and although I am fascinated by the history of quilting, I am not overly fond of busy quilts.
This book gives a short, one page introduction to the originals of each quilt pattern and details the various names by which you may have heard of the pattern.
Denise then goes on to clearly explain how she interpreted the pattern to make the quilt as simply as possible. I think this is a lovely quilt book, in fact one I wish I had written myself. I mean that as a compliment.
I have not made any of the quilts and will revise my comments when I have. I awarded four stars, as I prefer a spiral bound book to lay flat and open beside my sewing machine.

Very inspirational! 25 Mar. 2012
By Lora Lee Douglas - Published on Amazon.com

If you love traditional quilt patterns with a modern take, relative to the color scheme and fabric selection, you will love this book. Usually when I get quilt books, I look at the pictures and look at the construction techniques on some of the patterns. I am actually reading through the text in this book so I can learn more about the history of the quilt patterns and how Denyse put her modern spin on it. There are a couple of quotes in the book that I love: "If you're a beginner quilter and the instructions seem intimidating, just take it piece by piece, and remember that mistakes are opportunities for discovery." This is so true.

Another quote, "A book of traditional quilt patterns-some of which require cutting thousands of tiny pieces-seems to go against the grain of most crafting books these days, and is antithetical to our culture which demands instant gratification and ever-faster results. I hope you can embrace the idea of quilting as a "slow craft," and enjoy the opportunity to engage in a satisfying, contemplative pastime that offers rewards relative to your efforts." Kind of reminds me of my motto: The pleasure is in the process.

The book provides some quilt history and 20 beautiful projects to inspire you. The emphasis is on the quilt top design, not necessarily the quilting. I think Denyse wanted to keep the quilting simple, so the quilt top design would be the star.

I Seriously Want to Make Every. Quilt. in. this. Book! 23 Mar. 2012
By R. Baucum - Published on Amazon.com

I have been a big fan of Denyse Schmidt's patterns and fabric ever since she started out. I decided to order this book and I am so glad I did because it is a visual treat. I plan on savoring the reading over the weekend, picking out the quilts I will be making, and in what order I will be sewing them.

Some of the patterns will challenge me - especially the applique quilts and the drop-dead gorgeous Snake Trail quilt. But part of her mission in writing this book is to get quilters to try new techniques and she provides clear instructions (from the little I have read).

The book itself is beautiful - well made and the photographs are enticing. If you want to make the exact same quilts in the book, she even lists the fabric manufacturers and colors that she used. This book is worth every penny - not just because there are so many great quilt patterns, but also because in perusing the pages, I get a sense of what a talented artist she is, and her designs (corny as it sounds) are timeless. This will be a book that will be used many, many times. Thank you Denyse!

New twist on the old 20 Nov. 2012
By Triple Moon Goddess Indiana - Published on Amazon.com

The quilting world "seams" to be a place of contention more and more. There are those who shun "Y" seams, and those who methodically stitch them and deem themselves "better quilters". The fact is that you still have a beautiful creation that keeps you warm. Isn't that the idea?

The same goes for the term "modern quilting". There are some that think this means "radically different". Not so. Modern quilting means less fuss about exactitude, new twists , and bolder fabrics. It means larger stitches in quilting the piece, and quick completion. Modern quilting means using your leftovers and scraps as much as possible, those great bold fabrics that you love and want to show off. It means taking the old and making it quicker, off center, and using bold fabrics.

This book illustrates that perfectly. Maybe some missed the part of the title that says "traditional inspiration". The old designs are clearly visible in the quilts, quite so, but modern quilting is NOT about trashing all the old quilt styles and looks, but reinventing them. It is about making them in a week, not a year. It is about simplicity. The fabric is the thing, and it can be just two fabrics to make a stark contrast or all of your scraps to make a crazy , bold statement.

This book has beautiful quilts with a nod to the old. It is absolutely a modern quilting book, becasue it follows the real definition of modern quilting, not someone's idea of radical. Modern quilting does not mean radical, although some modern quilts can be just that.

This book puts a new twist and flavor on the old, and follows that true definition of "modern quilting", if you are looking for "radical quilting", then this is not the book for you....but then I doubt that was ever the intent.

Great book for new twists, learning about bold colors, and yes, even for those who are new to quilting. I wouldn't recommend it as a book to teach someone to quilt, but it is a good book for shaking up the old just a little, and learning the true modern quilting techniques.

I love taking this book off the shelf and just looking at the quilts. They are truly inspiring, and do not go off the deep end.

Tastefully restrained 28 May 2012
By Pugmama - Published on Amazon.com

Ms Schmidt has put a modern edge on traditional patchwork quilts. By enlarging the old quilt blocks and omitting the endless repetition of the old layouts she has transformed "busy" into "graphic". She has done this with all types of traditional styles, including Hawaiian, Broderie Perse, stamped surface embellishment and whole cloth examples. There is a charming little postage stamp doll quilt that almost anybody could make (and most experienced quilters wouldn't perhaps bother with) but what makes it fresh and inviting is her simple juxtaposition of modern and traditional fabrics. The book is full of these simple but effective tricks for making timeless quilted treasures. The more I look at this book, the more I like it.

Gorgeous! 13 May 2012
By Lisa - Published on Amazon.com

I have purchased several modern quilting books recently. (Books by Alissa Haigh Carlton and Elizabeth Hartman and a couple of others) This book was head and shoulders above the rest in quality for money. It has a wide variety of styles. Granted they are more traditional in flavour, but have been given a modern twist. The book is hard cover and thus makes it a lovely coffee table book to boot! There are descriptions on all the quilts, as well as easy to follow patterns. I really can't say enough about this book. I have to admit, I don't love all the quilts in the book, but show me a book that you do.
