Product Description

Product Description

The PMA-720AE is equipped with an Advanced HC (High-Current) Single Push-Pull Circuit that enforces Denon’s design concept for pure audio amplification. This design ensures that you hear delicate musical details, reliably supported by plenty of power. Playback faithful to the original sound is also made possible by a circuit board layout that can handle the greater power from the amplifier section and appropriately respond to the output level and unique character of the signal. In addition, the internal construction of the PMA-720AE has been carefully designed to prevent unwanted vibration from adversely affecting the audio signal.

Bought this to replace my TEAC AG-790E Stereo Receiver that developed a fault after 14 months,

The Denon PMA720AE Integrated Amplifier run through my 4 speaker set up of Celestion & Mission speakers is truly breath taking I have never heard the stereo image as good as this rated at 50 watts into 8 ohms using just 30% of available volume the sound is amazing no hesitation in recommending the Denon PMA720AE Integrated Amplifier with all inlets used CD,Tape,Network,Phono,Aux & digital tuner all sound better than before with the other amp.

I had been using a Denon PMA-250III amplifier for more than 15 years. I originally purchased that amp because I have a small home studio for recording my own, guitar-based music to digital media. As such, I wanted an amp that could be used both as a power amp to provide clean sound without equalisation (using the "Source Direct" function) and also as a hi-fi amp. It was (and still is) a superb amp in terms of sound quality and power but recently began to show signs of age in an occasionally temperamental input selection switch. That switch was an enclosed unit and so, rather than replace the switch, I looked to replace the amp.

Having been so impressed with the Denon PMA, I looked online for as direct replacement as could be found and was delighted to discover that the Denon PMA range still exists but in an updated and more advanced form. I chose the PMA720AE because it was the model that offered at least the same functionality as the older amp (especially Source Direct) but also provides more than adequate power to my (un-powered) monitor speakers. Those were my main criteria but I was even further delighted to find an improved and advanced technology throughout the amp. The amp now has 6 inputs and these can be selected by remote control (as can the power on/off switch and volume control) which means an improved switching mechanism to that which became temperamental in my older amp. You can connect two pairs of speakers and select these manually which means that you can use speakers at the same time as headphones or any combination thereof as desired. I also noted that the current price was actually less than what I paid for my original PMA.

I'd never had a 'hi-fi' system before. I recently compared a song downloaded from iTunes with their compressed 'lossy' format with the same song played through headphones from CD. And even my aging ears could tell the difference. So a hi-fi purchase seemed a reasonable prospect.

I got my Denon PMA-720ae as a package with its sister CD-player and a pair of Dali Zensor1 speakers. All from Richer Sounds who sell via Amazon as well as through their own online and retail store presence.

To be quite honest it was the Zensors that attracted me the most. I was after a speaker I could mount on the wall, wasn't fussy about placement (none of this 'toe-in' rubbish), was small (I live in a normal pre-War detached house) and got good reviews. The Dalis hit every spot. The key attraction of the Denon was its built-in Phono stage, and it is installed with a British-build Rega RP1, as I too have fallen prey to the return of the vinyl LP (having got rid of most of my collection over a decade ago!)

The end result? Well I've not managed to finish the 100 hours run-in time and the speakers aren't yet mounted on the wall, but even so...wow!

I listen mostly to British progressive rock or progressive metal, particularly live-recorded music. I've seen one magazine review suggesting the Denon amp is a little uncompromising. I can't figure that - acoustic instruments sound fantastic, as if delivered through a valve amp. Any harshness is non-existent; even after hours the music sounds fresh and alive, never tiring.

I found it best to compare with music I know well. So on of the first CD's was Anthony Phillips and Harry Williamsons 'Tarka' from 1988 (not very 'metal' I know!

Great value and top performing amp. I bought this amp to replace my trusty Technics SU-V460 integrated amp, which has served me well for 20 plus years without a blip. I have a Denon home cinema amp (AVR2000) which I bought this year and I was very pleased with the Denon "sound" before on previous A/V receivers. This seemed a natural choice as I run two sets of speakers in a home studio setup (B&W 685 and B&W 686) and they work brilliantly with this amp. I'm not looking for an audiophile performance because I don't really know if I'd recognize one if it boxed me around the ears. However this is a warm sound, full of detail and muscular through the B&W's. It has all the switching needed and is easy to understand and use and not tiring through long sessions. Best feature which the purists will hate is the loudness button (which the old technics had) - for me it's fabulous for listening to rock music at low level with just the right of amount of variable boost to the low end. Great product, highly recommended.
