Bought this to replace a £200 Onkyo unit which was less than two years old and just awful. I paid £800 from another high street retailer, but I've had it for 6 weeks now and,as the title suggests, its brilliant. Goes to show that if you going to do home cinema you may as well do it properly. Attached I've got 5 B&W M-1 speakers which I heartily recommend, and then Bluray, xbox, WD livehub, Sony DVR, ipod touch through airplay (and my laptop for that matter)... with 7 hdmi inputs you won't be running short for a while. I don't have a subwoofer as a) it only serves to annoy the neighbours and b) the B&W one I want costs another £600!

So, the initial setup.

Setup is simple and conducted through an onscreen gui. The microphone pictured to the left of the amp has a suitably long cable and was remarkable accurate - I used a tape measure to check the speaker distances as I have an unorthodox viewing angle and the measurements made by the microphone were correct within 10cm.

Use

I prefer using 'Direct' source ie without using the on board processing as that way you get a cleaner sound. That said music (more of which later) sounds better played using the dolby pro logic 2 driven through all five speakers as opposed to stereo. The sound is supremely good from all sources. Crisp, excellent definition. Just what you paid for, though quality speakers and cabling are very important too, and not those awful ones that come in an all in one package. Be sure to get advice on which speakers you partner with it. It may be that your current speakers may work better with a different brand altogether.

Remote control

Its ugly, but it is luminous, and not all the buttons are completely pointless. Like many remotes there's a special button which breaks it.

I had a previous Denon receiver that I loved the sound quality of...but after getting a 3D T.V. I needed an upgrade and opted for an Onkyo 608 receiver... I have missed the Denon sound so recently opted to trade in the Onkyo for this beauty....

Set up is a doddle...PS3, Panasonic Blu Ray connected by HDMI then output via HDMI to my Sony T.V. The first thing that wowed me was the picture quality I am getting...its fab....I am very impressed with the picture the Denon delivers to my T.V. and I did not need to make much of a tweak to it, cause it looks so good..I used to watch T.V. directly without it going through the amp but now I get a much better picture watching from the Panansonic Blu ray player, this was the complete opposite on the Onkyo..

Obviously I love the sound of the Denon...its more suited to my ears, I find the sound warmer, less tiring and an absolute pleasure....surround sound works fab and the set up seems to make my speakers and sub integrate better....

There are plenty of tweaks you can make with the Denon and Previous Onkyo, but I was never 100% happy with the Onkyo and I was always playing with it...Ihave not tweaked the Denon as it looks and sounds so great....sure there are less tweaks to make but that makes it easier for me to leave it where it is......

Onkyo used to buzz a bit...the Denon does not buzz...extras like airplay work well and sounds fab and I have used the applie app to control the amp but the remote is very functional and easy to use....so I guess I will use that, unless i lose it....

Great price on this made my mind up.....A Fab amp at a Fab price....

Ive always had panasonic equipment in the past but reading as many reviews as I could on most of the other brands such as sony, harman k, etc I decided to go with denon & im not disappointed. Firstly its a nice looking piece of kit & secondly the sound is fantastic...add to the fact it can handle 3d Audio & Visual & has 4k functionality then everything else is a bonus.Internet connectivity & easy UI, its fair to say the only thing it cant do is make the tea. There are quite a few amps on the market but for me this is a great mid range amp & would recommend it to anyone.5*

I went from an old Denon 1803, which has served me well over the last 10 years, but for the last 4-5 years I wanted to upgrade it to one that was around the £1k mark, but still haven't got around to having it at the top of the list of things I want. So as a temporary measure I fell back to getting this, mainly because the bad press Onkyo's low priced AV's have been getting recently due to substandard HDMI cards. The features I was mainly interested in was HDMI (reduce the amount of wires, as all my HDMI cables were going to my TV and audio to my AV), Audyssey and Spotify in my front room.

The sound quality is excellent, my sub has never sounded so good and the positioning of the front stage using the stereo is excellent (had to physically check my center speaker was off). Added Audyssey, with just using dynamic EQ (meant to make it sound as good independent of the volume, rather than just at reference), the bass was improved yet further, my front bookshelf speakers became slightly meatier, but the overall difference wasn't that dramatic, but still an improvement nonetheless. Tried the dynamic volume (compression) for s complete action film, with the volume down for 'late night watching' and I didn't have to touch the volume control after the first 5 minutes of sorting it out. Only problem is that surround speakers are too loud in multi-channel stereo, I don't think I can play with this without mucking up part of what Audyssy has done, will have to have a play though.

HDMI problems, so far these have been minimal (I've had it for about 3 weeks), it's once needed to be turned off and on again to get the sound to work once. With my PVR (Humax twin sat tuner) the picture flashes to black and back, after a few seconds of it being on, but from then on behaves itself well.
