Amazon.co.uk Review

Footballers, particularly those like me who are lucky enough to play for one of the more glamorous clubs, have a great life. You feel that nothing can touch you. You feel somehow totally protected. Then something happens to let you know that you are just as vulnerable as everyone else."
The old cliché "a blow-by-blow account", really comes into its own here as football's smallest bad boy takes us from growing up poor on the mean streets of West London to earning a fortune in the Premiership.

A self-confessed--and largely unrepentant--scrapper both on and off the pitch from his days as an apprentice, Wise's talent has always gone hand in hand with his temper.

A key member with Vinnie Jones and Justin Fashanu of Wimbledon's infamous Crazy Gang, he made a virtue of towering self-belief and a healthy disregard for the game's sacred cows. Subsequent performances for his country and as captain of Chelsea have brought his blend of sublime skill and fierce competitiveness to the international stage.

It's a combination which has yielded enormous success and conflict with the authorities both within the game and beyond. In 1995 everything changed with a conviction and prison sentence for assaulting a taxi driver. Wise was released after a few hours on appeal and freely admits that the experience of helplessness was "the worst moment of my life".

While referees and opposition players may question whether a less combative Dennis Wise emerged, there's a maturity of insight into the much envied life of the professional footballer in these pages that suggests there's more to him than his public image allows.

Perhaps the frank tales of football's more brutal moments will steal the headlines, but his home-grown observations of the United Nations of Chelsea are from the heart of the current revolution in the game and make compulsive reading. --Alex Hankin

I began to read this book with an expectation that it was going to be a poorly written piece of self glorification. I am sorry to say it is worse than this.

The subject recounts many occasions in cliché, detailing situations where everyone else was wrong and he was justified in his continued selfish & often oafish actions. There is little apology for his continued loutish behaviour and undisguised revelling in an approach that earned him the accolade as one of the most despised professionals of his generation.

The book details an individual happy to undermine managers and colleagues on a regular basis. Wise demonstrates a willingness to do anything to get his own way as typified by his admittance of acting as a delinquent to secure a move from Wimbledon to Chelsea.

The book is egocentric rubbish that gives an unfortunate insight into the lifestyle of some modern professionals. It is sad to say that in many ways Dennis Wise set a benchmark for the poor behaviour of many in the game today.

I would only recommend you read the book to ensure that you do not underestimate what a thoroughly unlovable person the subject appears to be.

This book details the rise of Dennis Wise from his lowly upbringing to his stardom as an England International footballer. It gives an insight into all of the events in his life not least the well documented incident, his brush with the law. This is described in an emotive way and throughout the book the reader feels involved and although perhaps best received by fans of the man it is definitely a book you cannot put down.

Not normally into sports biographies I found this refreshing and childlike in his account of his first football club , and how he almost ruined his career and then turnt it all around. His honesty and sometimes funny accounts of people he knows famous or otherwise makes you like him more. Above all he shows his committment and loyalty to his team and you feel that he almost hears what your saying when you attend football. Good read didn't put it down
