Product Description

Product Description

As the battle between good and evil becomes a war between love and lust, a powerful vampire, Bachell, sets out to seduce a victim who is not only perfect, but willing. However, Bachell is obsessed with the all-powerful vampire Maria, and his perfect victim is in love with another. Only one thing is certain: if he is to survive, he must not be denied. A vampire story of epic proportions, Denied sweeps the reader up in a tragic and darkly compulsive tale of jealousy, love and lust. Moving from Lancashire, England, to Paris, France, the novel sheds a deadly new light on the question of what it means to be a vampire. First revelation: "The myth that vampires need permission to enter the houses of victims is a truth in disguise. It speaks of sex, not houses."-Sivan.

Bring on the sequel! 14 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
Denied is a refreshingly old-school vampire yarn that owes more to Hammer era Dracula than Meyer style teen romance (thank God).
Brien does a fine job of honing and reinvigorating gothic folklore, finding ingenious ways to reconnect disparate vampire archetypes.
Monstrous Nosferatus and brooding immortals share an intriguing new evolution and the inclusion of werewolves takes the tale to new levels of adventure, mystery and page-turning excitement.
The novel has two distinct parts, the first acting as an extended prologue, quite different in tone and location to the later. It's a bold structural move, reader's may prefer one part of the book over the other, but Brien's commitment, the brisk pace and engaging characters cover any cracks. A sequel is surely essential.

I waited a long time to read Pat's book, after hearing that he had gained the interest of an agent / publishing house. Finally he did publish and I was able to read the novel. The first part of the book didn't really grab me, but I continued on reading - then it took hold and won't let go. I soon realized the importance of the first part to the book and how it results in very unexpected twists and turns within the story. If you have a wicked streak and enjoy gore - this book is for you. Unique in it's own right. Very interesting view on the creatures involved. I for one cannot wait to see where the story goes in it's follow up and what surprises await us.

Worth a read 21 Sep 2010

Hector Lerbioz is correct in his review in saying that Pat Brien has a very matter of fact way of writing but that in itself defuses some of the horror described in the book. The casual browser who picked this up from the shelf may also be put off by his attempt to write in the style of the times in which the story is set. Many books and films now portray a link between vampires and werewolves but Brien goes one further and suggests that vampires are descended from weres and if denied the sustenance they require will revert back to their former state. The sustenance they require to prolong their lives in this novel is not just blood but the blood of an innocent and worthy victim freely given, so his vampires have to seduce their intended victims and if 'denied' then suffer a descent into a werewolf. The characters in this bloodthirsty novel are freely slaughtered in horrible ways and their bodies abused which some readers may find offensive however to his credit Brien has at least portrayed vampires as the monsters of legend and not sparkly skinned teenage pretty boys. The book is an easy read with a fast moving narrative in short chapters but I don't think it is destined to be the 'most important vampire novel of the decade' as the cover proclaims.
