So, where do I start with this game?
Well I can only comment on the version I bought which was in English but the Chinese Version.
Let me start with this, it's brutal!! the first level is awesomely difficult, the first time I played it took me 4 hours to complete! even one hit has the potential to kill you if you don't have your shield up. I sense a lot of people would give up on this game after a couple of hours, but! once you pass the first level you get an idea that its going to be big and once you discover the ability to level and upgrade you will most likely be hooked
The Good!
First off it's not a traditional RPG in that characters don't have class specific skills, they start off with a different spread of stats. I'll give an example, a barbarian starts with strength of 15 and a mage with strength of 8. However, its possible for barbarians to learn magic and for mages to use their strength. For newbies, the mage has armor and weapons more suited to distance fighting and the barbarian for close quarters combat.
character generation is quite good, you can choose either gender and make a wide array of variations to their facial features and you can have up to four characters saved at any one time.
The graphics are superb, i haven't seen any blockiness or glitching on it yet I bought mine before xmas from China :o) there are a few loading screens for each level which take up to about 20 seconds but once in the level its free flowing without any loading which is awesome when you are running around.
The camera angle self adjusts as you move with the ability to move it in any direction via right stick
The controls are simple to both pick up and to use, many elements of the game are dependant upon whether u have died in your body form or whether you have killed various demons or NPC's - every action can affect what other things happen in the game. If you play the good guy the game is easier, the enemies are fewer with less HP, if you die a lot in body form and kill NPC's the enemies are much tougher and there are more of them, the benefit is you can interact with certain game characters only if you have done some killing of innocents and died a lot!!
Gameplay is fantastic, for the most part simple brute force will not work, tactical fighting is nearly always required.
All weapons can be upgraded and bought and different enemies require different tactics and certain weapons and magics are more or less effective, much trial and error is needed here!!
Weapon/Equipment upgrades. It is impossible to upgrade all the weapons fully in just one playthrough due to limited upgrade drops, another tip, kill ALL the crystal Geckos, they have limited numbers of spawns and once gone thats it till your next playthrough. But it is still possible to upgrade lots of your gear albeit not to maximum on one playthrough, which again gives you more of an incentive to play again.
Game Longevity. When you have fully completed the game once, then you realise that you have probably not created your character as ideally as you would have liked, and like me you will most likely begin another game, hence the 200+ hours.
This brings me to NG+ or playing the second time around, just when you have got used to killing most things with your +5 flaming broad sword and have their swords bouncing off your armor and shield you are back to first playthrough first level difficulty and can die in one hit!!! Plus for each playthrough after the difficulty level increases so you are never invincible, which makes it a lot more fun!!
Plus you have the ability to have up to two others play any level with you as Blue Phantoms, this can be especially useful against some of the tougher end of level bosses like flamelurker!!!!
You can also get invaded by other players who want to steal your body so it then becomes a player vs player battle and it gets the heart racing when someone else has invaded your world with the sole intention of destroying you even when you have two other Blue phantom helpers!!!
You can also challenge other Black Phantoms in a player vs player solo match
Playability - I have clocked up over 200 hours on this and haven't even looked at PVP, for anyone that loves RPG's with a difference go get this and stick with it until you have done the first couple of levels, trust me you'll be hooked!
Gripes?
The end of world bosses are easier to defeat than some of the standard enemies!! and the boss at end of world 4 can be ridiculously hard to beat.
Additional levels or a world would have been fantastic (only a minor gripe!)
I have not found any lag playing online and can get on with my friends, using a mic would have been a bonus but definitely doesn't detract from the game in any way.
I'll give you one tip, when you see the red eyed knight at the end of the tower in world 1 - 1 don't go that way unless you are an expert roll and counter player or you will die, lots of times!!!, other than that enjoy!!!!!!!!!
I rate this game 6 Stars out of 5
