Book Description

6 Jun 2005 Vampirates
Connor and Grace are twins, recently orphaned after their widowed father's death. Rather than being adopted by the town's busy-bodies, they decide to set sail for new pastures in their father's last single possession, his sailing boat. But a vicious storm sees their boat capsize and the twins separated. Two mysterious ships sail to their rescue - each picking up one twin before disappearing into the mist. Connor wakes to find himself on a pirate ship and is soon being trained up with a cutlass. Meanwhile Grace finds herself locked in a darkened room, as the vampirates await nightfall...Determined to find each other, yet intrigued by their new shipmates, the twins are about to embark on the biggest adventure of their life...

About the Author

Justin is well-known as a children's books publicity consultant, working on high profile campaigns including the launch of Anthony Horowitz's Alex Rider series and events at the Roald Dahl centre. Less well-known is his interest in vampires and that he's a dab hand at sword-fighting. Vampirates brings together both his interests, creating a world to delight children and adults alike.

I adored this book and read it in one go. The mixture of vampires and pirates is complemented by Somper's brilliant characterisation and style. The two twins experiences are intertwined and the suspense on will they meet again is embroidered into this vibrant sensory portrayal of a futuristic pirate world. I'm 18 now but I'm sure any child who likes adventure will simply devour this book! I'm waiting with bated breath for the next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the next one... 20 Feb 2006
By A Customer
Pirates, vampires, some great fight scenes and a huge cliffhanger, what's not to like? Cheng Li rocks, Mulucco Wrathe is hilarious and Lorcan is literally drop dead gorgeous.

5.0 out of 5 stars VAMPIRTES Demons of the Ocean 17 Dec 2006
This is a first rate book, it's exciting and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Once I picked the book up and started reading I couldn't put it down until I had finished reading the last page. It's one of those books you can read time after time and never lose interest. I love the way Justin Somper has developed the characters he made them very real. It is a book that would appeal to younger readers as well as the older reader. The second book Tide of terror is even better and I can't wait for the next two books. Well done. This is a brillient book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent start to a swashbuckling series 9 Feb 2011
Grace and Connor Tempest become orphans when their father - the rather eccentric lighthouse keeper who teaches them a shanty about Vampirates - dies. Under threat of being taken in by the local banker, the twins run away from home on their father's boat. When a storm sweeps in the boat is capsized and the twins are separated. Connor joins a pirate ship, and soon begins learning the ropes and making friends with other pirates, while Grace ends up on an altogether stranger ship. Mysteries are uncovered as the twins try desperately to reunite on the high seas...

Vampires! And Pirates! Vampirates! Seriously, what a deeply cool mash-up for a book - I can easily imagine the pitch for this novel and how quickly agents/publishers snapped it up. But is it a concept and nothing else? That's what I wanted to know most...

The good news is that there is definitely more to Demons of the Ocean than just the opening premise of pirates who also happen to be vampires. We have some strong lead characters, a couple of entertaining fight scenes and just all-round swashbuckling fun.

Somper does very well with the pacing of the novel - once Grace and Connor have been separated, we experience virtually alternate chapters from each point of view, often with a climax that makes the reader want to continue turning the pages. This was definitely a wise move, since the simple plot might otherwise appear somewhat slight.

Somper's strength is definitely presenting concepts such as compassion, mercy, loyalty and friendship through the excitement of a rip-roaring adventure story. None of these messages are conveyed overly strongly, but give a good sense of right and wrong.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vampires and pirates - who could ask for more? 25 Aug 2008
By Amanda Richards VINE VOICE
If you were an orphan
Adrift on the sea
Vampire or pirate
Which one would you be?

But there wasn't a choice
For Connor and Grace
Cast apart by a storm
Each to a different place

One twin ended up on
A big pirate ship
The other woke up in
A vampirate's grip

Though the future was dim
Through the mist and the rain
They never lost hope
That they'd meet up again

This is an exciting adventure for young readers from about eight or nine. It combines several unlikely elements, such as being set in the future and yet taking inspiration from history, as well as combining a child's favorite villains to introduce "vampirates"

This first book in the series introduces the main characters, Connor and Grace Tempest, teenaged twins who are orphaned when their father passes away. Unable to live with the choices available, the twins run off in their father's boat, which fails to weather a terrible storm and they are cast into the sea.

They are both rescued, but by different ships, and neither knows if the other has survived. The rest of the story deals with the way each copes with the hand fate has dealt. Told in simple language, and with colorful and intriguing characters, this one is recommended for young readers interested in pirates and vampires.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Childrens tale 30 Oct 2007
By Gareth Wilson - Falcata Times Blog TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
The first novel in the Vampirate series and is something that really did grab me from its first page. Highly addictive with a wonderful world for the reader to explore and will enchant readers old and young alike. What also adds to this tale is the wonderful depictions of the principle protagonists alongside characters that as a reader we would just love to meet. As a recommendation I really can't say enough about this series except that perhaps its not going to be too long before this series will either be optioned by a film company or perhaps even as a TV series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 22 April 2006
I'm not a big reader but was drawn to this by the picture on the cover first, then the blurb on the back. Once I picked it up I couldn't put it down. I love the way the chapters alternate between the two characters and many a time leave you in suspense. Although I found the ending a little dissapointing, it has made me go straight on to Amazon to see if there is a sequal, and I'm so glad there is!!!
