4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Hammer...good but not great, 12 Nov 2008
By Bex (West Lothian, Scotland) - See all my reviews
This is a pretty unknown Hammer film, and I searched for it for a long time before it was released on DVD (the video was deleted years ago!).

So when it was finally released I was rather excited having heard good things about the film.

The feel of the film is classic old Hammer stuff and the performances, paricularly from the young actors playing Emil and Elizabeth, are pretty good.

Its quite a bleak little film though, without a happy ending but I think the dark story should satisfy horror fans, although I don't think the film would appeal to a particularly wide audience these days.

My only complaint would be that the plot is sometimes confusing, but other than that I highly recommend Demons of the Mind to any serious film fan. You don't get films like this anymore!

2.0 out of 5 stars Bit of a dud, 8 Aug 2008
By www.DavidLRattigan.com (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

My passion for Hammer horror is such that I can enjoy just about anything bearing the studio's name, so I can't say I didn't get some pleasure from this. But it is still a fairly poor example of Hammer horror. The pace is rather pedestrian, and the plot is a bit tedious. I did enjoy Patrick Magee in a rare Hammer appearance, however.

2.0 out of 5 stars Really poor, 30 Dec 2008

This should have been a cracking little film. A superb cast, including Michael Hordern, Robert Hardy and Patrick Magee with a potentially interesting story set over 90 minutes looks like a winner from the start. Its not...

Sadly the script lets the whole thing down badly. There are quite a few really clunky lines which made me wince, and the plot whilst initially slightly confusing became entirely predictable as the film went on.

This being made in the early 70's Hammer took the opportunity to take advantage of the more lenient censorship laws and so this does contain nudity and some quite violent scenes. These don't particularly enhance the film, and you'd expect them from a late period Hammer film anyway.

In all honesty as the film got near the end I couldn't wait for it to finish, it had become that irratating. Oh by the way, yes that is the Paul Jones of Manfred Mann and Blues Band fame who plays one of the leading roles.

The only Hammer film I have seen worse than this was Prehistoric Women. My advice don't watch either....
