Horror Lite 12 Oct 2011
By Mr. G. Battle VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
There is a surprising lack of horror in Demon's Door, which offers a plot akin to those found in Korean horror cinema. It's an original angle from Masterton, however there's not enough substance nor enough tension to bring it up to the author's usual standard. It's relatively short with no requirement to have read any previous Rook stories. It does offer a few genuine shock moments and is above the par of many other horror novels, just not up the usual Masterton bar.

Demons Door 27 Dec 2010
Format:Hardcover
Disappointing, it is if Graham Masterton is running out of ideas much along the normal Jim Rooke series, not very frightening at all.

Why would anyone enroll in Jim Rook's class? 21 May 2012
By KinksRock - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This past weekend, I read both Swimmer (Jim Rook Series) (Bk. 5) and Demon's Door (Jim Rook Series), and my impression of both is basically the same, so I'm combining them for one review.

These books are fine if you are in the mood for fast-paced, supernatural action. I'm reading another book right now by a certain very famous horror writer from Bangor, Maine, and, in the time that it takes that author to introduce you to all the main characters, Masterton has already gotten you through that, killed off a few people in gory ways, maybe even killed a cat and brought it back from the dead, and gotten you close to the climax of the book. Both styles have their merits, but my reading time was going to be heavily interrupted this weekend, and the Maine writer's style was not going to suit my circumstances. (What's his name again?)

In SWIMMER, special ed. teacher Jim Rook is up against a spirit who takes the physical form of water. I imagine she looks a lot like the bad terminator from "Terminator 2" when he's in the midst of taking form as something or someone -- all clear and glassy.

In DEMON'S DOOR, he's up against a Korean fox-woman spirit, and time has gotten confused, with days repeating themselves, and, at one point, Jim Rook getting to see himself as an old man.

In both books, these spirits are stalking and killing off Rook's friends and students. Exactly how many times does Rook say: "Call 9-1-1! Tell them to send paramedics!" Sorry, but after a while the word would get around: Don't enroll in Jim Rook's class!

Fun. Silly. Not too scary. Not boring at all. These books are fine if they are what you are in the mood for.

But I still think an American editor would be useful. At one point there was a recess at the college where Jim Rook teaches. Recess? I remember that term from elementary school, but are there colleges where there is something called recess?
First Taste of Rook 24 Feb 2012

I had avoided the Jim Rook series previously because I had thought it was just regular detective style work. When it was pointed out to me that this was not the case I decided to give it a try. I was prepared for almost anything since Masterton genre hops so much that a novel he creates which seems to be one style, can quickly turn to be another style ( its hard to make a comment about a Masterton novel without giving too many hints on what it does in the narrative). Jumping into Devils door is like sampling an episode in a great series, but it is clearly different. The history of Jim Rook, his cat, and the Community college is very significant. What impressed me immediately is that it first and foremost is a great read. No Masterton fan will be disappointed about the writing, however, its as different in Masterton's works as TRAUMA,CHAOS THEORY, and some other items are to his works like WELLS OF HELL, PARIAH, and HYMN, which does not make them less, it makes them different. To my mind, Masterton toys with light and shade in his book series ( Nathan Underhill, Harry Erskine, and Jim Rook) so that, I suspect he keeps himself interested, as well as something to vary for the reader.
On one level I could imagine DEMONS DOOR as an episode to a TV series, but the point is that you get a great introduction to his cat, to Jim Rook, and his life. Being slammed into several events in earlier Rook books would give you one view, just as reading DEMONS DOOR gives you a superb Mythological look at Rook's life, with some pretty heavy experiences. The episodes in DEMONS DOOR are done as, I suspect, part of a longer series that gives a great experience. All I can say is that I was extremely happy with DEMONS DOOR as my first choice, and I went to DARKROOM next and it is very much the Deeper, Darker, Uber Masterton of my past. I suspect you will love Rook, and whilst at it, order PETRIFIED, its VERY good. I have not done my review of that yet, still gives me chills !!!
An important note is that the SEVERN paperback is extremely high Quality, so buy it new if you can, and the problems from the mass market paperback that plagues some Masterton releases can be avoided since the acid free paper and high quality binding makes for a great plus in the quality.
Great story, too short, book feels rushed.... 9 Oct 2010

This is the lastest book in the Jim Rook series. For those of you that do not know about the Jim Rook series, he is a English college teacher for kids that have issues with reading and writing, and he has the ability to see spirits that others cannot. By having this gift, demons and the like are drawn to him and usually go after his students.

Anyhow, this book is the latest in that series and by far the least best. The idea was great, about a Korean demon after Rook for reasons he does not know, and gives him a gift (though I still do not get why he was given the gift, especially after the twist of the ending). He figures out it is a student of his (similar to another Rook book) that is causing these mishaps and for most of the book tries to figure out how to stop it. Some scary moments but nothing nearly as freaky as his other Rook books. Great writing as always from the master of horror, great idea, but not thought of very well. I do feel this book was way rushed (under 200 pages) and really didn't explain why it all ended the way it did, him against the demon. It was no massive showdown, nothing really earth shattering as his other Rook books. I especially didn't like the parts in which he was shocked that he was talking to spirits of the recently dead when, in all his other books, he was able to do it without getting too freaked.

All in all, it is a good read for those Rook fans and I do recommend it only because Graham Masterton is the MASTER of horror!
