4.0 out of 5 stars Review from The Word Fiend 4 July 2011
By Shelagh
Format:Paperback
The Demon Trapper's Daughter is a thrilling read aimed at the older end of the YA market.

This cover works for me - I like the combination of the cooler tones of the black and white photography with the warmth of the red foreground. It gives the impression of two worlds colliding, like those of Hell and Atlanta. The girl crouched on the edge of a building with her scruffy sneakers and glowing sphere is someone I wanted to meet - she looks like she'd have some great stories to tell. And Riley's story is definitely worth reading.

Jana Oliver has created a gritty, realistic world for readers to explore. In this world there are consequences to your actions and other people's decisions and attitudes can screw up your plans whether you deserve it or not. I have no problem with worlds where only the main characters' actions or fate play a major role in the story progression, but it is refreshing every now and again to be immersed in a world that doesn't play fair. But fear not - this does not mean that Riley gets dragged through the plot by other characters; she most definitely makes her mark on the story. It's just that things don't always turn out as intended, forcing her to regroup and make another plan. For me this showed great depth in Riley's personality as I watched her adapt to what the world was throwing at her.

Oliver has obviously put a lot of thought into the details her world - the different levels of demon, how to trap them and what happens to them once they have been trapped. Because she's taken the time to figure these things out for herself it is very clear what is being described throughout the book. Even though this was a new world for me as a reader I very soon felt at home and for that I must salute Oliver.
