Isn't it funny? For years Tom G Warrior slagged off Hellhammer as the recordings of a bunch of immature and angry teenagers. Upon the release of Monotheist, Tom could be seen wearing Hellhammer tshirts and now there's talk of a book about the history of Hellhammer.

Having been a Hellhammer fan for years I have found owning Apocalyptic Raids an incomplete collection of Hellhammer, and with this release finally all of Hellhammer is available. It is packaged beautifully at the size of a DVD box and inside has a booklet inside (that annoyingly cannot be removed) containing a few words from Tom Warrior as well as lyrics and photographs along with a mini poster showing a large print copy of the cover of the cheaper version of this release.

What surprised me about this release is the clear production on these demos. The material is clearer and more raw than the versions available on Apocalyptic Raids. The material is top notch, showing just why Hellhammer has been so respected for so long. It is also surprising just how raw and intense this material is for 1983. There is also a lot of interesting material on here that would be used in Celtic Frost material.

This is essential material, it's just a wonder why it's taken so long to be officially released!

A Magnum Metal Opus 24 Mar 2008
By Edward J. Holmes - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Oh wow man! When I heard about this collection of Hellhammer coming out I was really excited about it. I'll admit that I've not heard much of Hellhammer's music. I'm really only familiar with the ep "Apocyliptic Raids." I had heard some briefly when I was in high school with some stoner buddies of mine. I've actually read about them more than I had the chance to hear the band thru books and various magazines.
Everyone always had good things to say about Hellhammer. Countless bands have said that they had been heavily influenced by, to me, this elusive band. Mayhem, Emperor, and Burzum, aka: Count Grisnacht or Varg Vickernes if you want to get technical. Those bands that I just mentioned were coming up in the early and mid 90's. During that time, black metal was the new craze in the heavy metal underground. The funny thing about Hellhammer though is that they were playing in the style of black metal almost 10 years earlier. 1982, 83' to be exact. Black metal as a style on the metal family tree was just germinating at this time with Venom's second album titled "Black Metal" which was released in 1982. But Venom was more than a black metal band. They were thrash, speed, death and black metal. (Sorry I'm using the phrase: black metal too much but, what else can you call it?) Hellhammer on the other hand was pretty much the prototype "black metal" band. It really blows me away that there was music this fierce and heavy so early into the genre of heavy metal.
The first disc of this 2 cd set is called "Satanic Rights." An incredible recording from the embryonic period of Celtic Frost. For example: "Buried and Forgotten" turned into "Necromantical Screams" on Frost's album "To Mega Therion" from 1985. It's a little different in parts but it's definitly there. Some of the other tracks I thought were cool are "Messiah, Maniac, and Crucifixtion." The latter song is an absolute masterpiece of pure black metal mayhem! But seriously folks, the whole first cd is really cool.
Cd 2 is a mish mash of various live stuff that sounds like it was recorded on a boombox in someone's basement. It's far from unlistenable though. Even if the bass and drums drown out the guitar and singing, this second disc is vital too a metalhead's cd rack. Just for the historical importance alone. If you are familiar with black metal it shouldn't bother you. It's all been remixed anyway so I'm sure it sounds a lot better than it ever did. The production on the first cd is better but it has that filthy sound which to me is kinda cool.
I would have loved to give this album 5 stars but I couldn't because of it's packaging. I don't mind that it was a gatefold slipcase, I actually like that but, where are the photos and all that kind of stuff? I like documentation and sadly this cd has has none save for 2 reproduced cd cards with old Hellhammer artwork. And then, I open them up and they are just black inside. They could have put a picture and some text on those 2 cd jackets.
But please, don't let that stop you! For one thing, the price is great and the musical significance of this band is a cornerstone in the history of extreme music. I highly recommend "Demon Entrails" for people who are into real heavy metal

Heavier than hell and cooler than you'll ever be 21 Feb 2008

I'm not good at writing reviews, so I'll keep it short and down to the facts. This set contains all of Hellhammer's demos. 29 songs in all, re-mastered from original master copies by Tom Gabriel and Martin Eric Ain. They also dove into their personal archives to supply photo's and never before seen art work.

There are three versions of this, a triple LP edition, and a Deluxe 2 CD edition. Both feature a lavish booklet and a poster. There is also a bare-bones low priced version as well. I have the Deluxe 2 CD version, ordered directly from the manufacturer, it arrived on 2-19. It is full of rare never before seen pictures, reproductions of the original cassette tape covers, and a brief excerpt from the forthcoming book "Only Death is Real - The Illustrated History of Hellhammer and early Celtic Frost"

When Hallhammer released it's only official album "Apocalyptic Raids" the band had already been broken up, that album was regarded as one of the heaviest albums at the time. These songs show the progression of the band and how they would mature into Celtic Frost.

This is a good listen to hear the beginning of what would eventually become doom metal, thrash metal, black metal and death metal.

TRIUMPH OF DEATH 14 Mar 2008
By Fort Knox - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Outstanding release containing legendary 1983 demos 'Satanic Rites' and 'Triumph of Death'

Disc 1 is the real treasure [Satanic Rites] By this point Hellhammer was about as good as they ever were gonna get. This is basically a full-length Hellhammer album containing such familiar classics as 'Third of the Storms' 'Messiah' 'Revelations of Doom' and an amazing rendition of "Triumph of Death"

'Triumph' is not the only Hellhammer epic however, as there are two other songs that clock over the 6-minute mark. 'Satanic Rites' and 'Buried and Forgotten' which is an early version of "Necromantical Screams"

If you thought Apocalyptic Raids was too short, then definitely check out this release!

+ADD THIS TO YOUR COLLECTION+

P.S It is also worth mentioning the infamous black metal band MAYHEM borrowed quite a few Hellhammer songs titles for use as their pseudonyms:

Members of Mayhem:

Euronymous-Guitar

Messiah-Vocals

Maniac-Vocals

Hellhammer-Drums

and on "Live in Leipzig" I'm pretty sure Dead tells the audience "Only Death is Real!"
