Amazon.co.uk Review

Carol Starkey, protagonist of Robert Crais's new thriller Demolition Angel, has been as badly damaged by life as any whisky-soaked gumshoe; a bad moment three years ago cost her her lover, her physical confidence and the job on the LA Bomb Squad that she loved. When a former colleague is killed by an ingenious trap, and Pell, an obsessed federal agent, tells her about Mr Red, who blows people up for profit, but kills bomb technicians for fun, she knows that her path back to sanity lies through this case. With the attractive but secretive Pell as her guide, she explores an underworld where both she and Mr Red are fan fetishes, online chat rooms where his best killings and her best defusings are equally the currency of conversation and where she and Mr Red start a dangerous flirtation. This is perhaps the most suspenseful novel of the year--the demons that haunt Pell and Carol, the hair triggers and high explosives and dangerous minds, all combine in sequence after sequence of nail-biting intensity. From beginning to end, Crais continues to deliver, and to take nerve-wracking excitement--particularly in his almost outrageously intense final climax--further than ever before. --Roz Kaveney --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

John Michael Fowles has a natural talent: he understands explosives. He has a feel for them. It is a talent which he fully expects will take him onto the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list. Along the way he will match himself against the best: the FBI's elite team of bomb technicians and one person in particular - Carol Starkey, Detective in the LAPD Criminal Conspiracy Section. Starkey died for two minutes and forty seconds after being blown up by one of his bombs, and Fowles dearly wants her dead again. As the FBI attempt to find the link behind a series of bomb explosions that have been designed to kill their technicians, Special Agent Ben Williams stumbles on the bomber's secret: his desire to kill Starkey. If Williams can keep this from Starkey he can set a trap and catch the bomber. A trap that uses Carol Starkey as bait.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb narrative performance, 19 Aug 2001

(REAL NAME)
I had never heard of Robert Crais until I listened to the Demolition Angel cassettes. This isn't as barmy as it sounds because I regard an audiobook primarily as a performance, and the performer in this case is the sublime Lorelei King. I was familiar with her work via her readings of the Janet Evanovich "Stephanie Plum" novels. If she read a laundry list I would probably sit back and take notice. As it turned out this is a cracking story, not the usual Homicide,Vice,Private eye,car chase, shootout stuff beloved of many american authors. The storyline concerns the bomber with a grudge against bomb technicians, and a traumatised bomb squad operative Carol Starkey. The storyline is instantly engrosing, with lots of forensic detail about bombs and their construction(hopefully misleading!) and their appalling consequences for the victims. As Starkey herself was injured in the blast which killed her lover you have the psychological core to this unusual and engrossing narrative. This is particularly chilling stuff to listen to,but such detail adds a certain frison to an already fascinating thriller and the plot grips you from the start, I could not stop listening, this is all driven along by Ms Kings superb evocation of the many characters that inhabit this tale. For those who appreciate the true indulgance of being read-to this is a perfect blend of Author and Performer that should not be missed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bravo!!!, 10 Nov 2002
This review is from: Demolition Angel (Paperback)
I've read all the Crais novels and loved every single one, this being no exception. Before I read it I didn't expect to find the book as enjoyable as I actually did after realising that it wasn't an Elvis Cole novel. I found the characters intriguing right from the start though I must say they were not as striking as Elvis and Joe Pike. At times the story became predictable but a slight twist generally followed those parts. The relationship between Carol Starkey and 'Mr Red', as she knows him, is one of the most interesting and well thought out parts of the book. Nearing the end of the book, I moved on to the edge of my seat and was kept there for the remainder of the book. Crais should be proud of all his books and I hope he will continue to churn out his novels (even when they don't feature Elvis Cole)!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, 10 Mar 2008

This review is from: Demolition Angel (Paperback)
Traumatised Bomb disposal technician Carol Starkey is recovering from an explosion that caused the death of her lover and disposal partner, and she technically died for a short time.

The novel combines a fine thriller as Carol investigates the death of another bomb disposal technician with a deeply involving study of her trauma and suffering as she endlessly smokes, has a serious drink problem, and prescription drug dependency.

The twists and turns of this fine thriller draw us closer and closer into Carols mind as she struggles with a case so reminiscent of her past, and also as she confronts the psyche of Mr Red the bomber.

Absolutely superb.
