Review

This book is essential reading for graduate students as well as for policy makers interested in Europe... "International Politics"

Product Description

This text aims to capture the dominant character of the relationship between democracy and European integration, offering an account of alternative approaches to the origins, nature and development of the "democratic deficit" of the European Union. Its central thesis is that such a "deficit" stems as much from the inadequacy of existing institutional arrangements to meet the requirements of democratic shared-rule, as it does from the absence of a transnational demos, capable of directing its democratic claims to, and via, the central institutions. The author maintains that the more the Union approximates to a politically organized "union of peoples," the greater the possibilities of developing democracy within its structures.

It seems fair to suggest that Puchala's celebrated linking of the European Community (EC), now the European Union (EU), with the story of the elephant and the blind men has lost nothing from its original topicality in the early 1970s. Read the first page

The writing style is complex, the subject matter is thick and heavy, but for a course in European Politics, especially those taught by the author, this text is without doubt a must read! The paperback is a worthy purchase, and is very helpful a well. Besides, makes your bookshelf look nice!
