I bought this item out of curiosity. it being similar to those I used as a national service man in the nineteen forties. To be on the safe side, I used it, at first, in tandem with my Silva 5/45 Expedition which cost eight times as much. The accuracy equalled that of the Silva though it took an age to for the pointer to reach north. This is only to be expected from this type of compass and I was prepared for it. Despite this, it was a joy to use and I would be happy to use it on any occasion by itself. The case is strong enough to stand on without fear of having to pick up the pieces afterwards and the only thing I take with me when I use it on unfamiliar ground is a six inch plastic ruler with which to line up points of travel on the map. Heartily recommended for fun or serious use. Faster operation would have earned five stars.
