Elton John had never been acknoledged as a primary influence on Rea's music. But it certainly shows here on 2 tracks (Twisted Wheel and Dance! Don't think), as Chris does a fair imitation of Elton's piano style. Other highlights include the Springsteenesque "Cenotaph/ Letter from Amsterdam". The title track, with it's superb layers of guitars- a song that deserved to get onto any of his best of collections. The singles "Diamonds" (which reached #44) and "Raincoat and Rose" are both good. Particularly "Diamonds" with its upbeat sound and fine backing vocals. "Raincoat and Rose" was a less successful piece- although it possesses a mellow guitar solo. Of the later tracks only "Don't want your best friend," has stood the test of time. Overall though this album (Rea's second), is a classic that displays a range far greater than on the two compilations he has released. Worth getting.

Depite being and early, hard to find, overlooked Chris Rea album, this is fantastic. Every song, from start to finish is brilliant. "Twisted Wheel", "Cenotaph" and "Dont want your best friend" are fantastically energetic and fresh. The title track "Deltics" is raucous and gritty, while "Raincoat and a Rose" and "Seabird" beautiful and moving. I was not expecting this album to be great, i was very mistaken. "Benny Santini" and "Tennis" are good bouncy albums, but this has a musical depth which makes it hard to believe it falls between the two of them.
Its a tough album to find and out of print, so buy it while you can.

This Album is one of Chris Rea's earliest peices of work and any Rea fan will know that this album is truely a hidden gem. From the opening Twisted Wheel, and any of you lot going to the Twisted Wheel in the 70's will really appreciate the lyrics in this song, to some just fantastic guitar leads, this album has quality in abundance. The cover is of Chris walking along the North Sea coast, probably Redcar, and a great choice in my eyes. There is a limited edition vinyl of this album in a clear blue, if you have an option to get hold of one then do so. A legendary album
