5.0 out of 5 stars Great collection 21 July 2011

Normally I would wait till I'd finished a book before reviewing it. But there's so much packed into this massive volume that I reckon it would take me twenty years to get through it all! I won't list the contents since there's a full listing in the product description, but obviously all the well-known novels are here, together with the poetry and lots of lesser known work. There is also a biography of the author written by his son-in-law JG Lockhart soon after Scott's death - thankfully an abridged version since apparently the original ran to ten volumes!

I started with the earliest of his novels, Waverley, which is credited with being the first historical novel in the English language and which for some reason I had never previously read. Set in 1745 and looking at the last throes of Jacobitism through the eyes of our young English hero, it is filled with Scott's usual wit and fine descriptive writing and characterisation. It is a delight to know that it is only the first of many novels in my new Scott collection!

The inclusion of the original illustrations is an added bonus and they are well suited to the muted, almost sepia, screen of the Kindle. At the beginning of each novel is a short introduction, not in-depth, but giving snippets of interesting background information. There is also a glossary of archaic Scottish words, very helpful even to an archaic Scot like myself. It can be accessed either from the Table of Contents or by using the Search facility within the Menu.

The formatting is fine with the exception of footnotes. These are placed within the text at the relevant point and are sometimes helpful in the detail they provide. However, sometimes they will say, cryptically, `See Note 5' for example. I would, if I could work out where the notes are. However, this is a minor drawback in what is otherwise an excellent, very comprehensive collection. This is a volume I will be dipping in and out of for years to come.

Great edition of the complete works of a pre-Victorian novelist. Now in colour with kindle fire. Easy to use with contents pages and also for each novel as well. Using kindle features easy to search, use dictonary and make notes. As always great value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for lovers of Walter Scott 3 Feb 2014

I have enjoyed reading Scott since I was a boy. I have been gradually working my way through the complete works for some years. This kindle edition is the most convenient way to do it, better than the 27 volumes I have. And this edition includes everything - not just the novels, poems and plays, which is all I have in printed editions.

In my youth I found these tales heavy going (in a nutshell Victorian) but now as I mature and have a Kindle reader I am catching up on the classics and really enjoying them.

3.0 out of 5 stars Scott the wonder 15 Jan 2014

It has been such a long time since I have read some of Scotts novels and I so wanted to try them again and this book with all together was worthwhile. Now the novels are not easy reading as they are in old English & Scots and do take time to get through them, but if you like the old writers then this is for you

The complete works of Sir Walter Scott for less than a pint of beer?! What is there to complain about?
It will take me a long time to work my way through this collection - considering that this collection of works was written two hundred years ago, it still makes for interesting reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent edition
The occasional typo, but otherwise a decent edition of Scott's works. Good 19th century illustrations - shame they don't display very well on my Kindle.
