5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, mais..... 16 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
No author appeals to everyone, but if you like Jules Verne, this excellent book contains all his novels, short stories, poetry, plays and non-fiction. It is a massive book. Amazon are not joking when they warn of a longer than usual download time.
If you are not sure about JV, try one or more of the freebies, and find out why JV is so highly regarded.
Although I have read quite a lot, I have only scratched the surface, but so far I am impressed. The English is stylish and does not read like a translation, the illustrations are appropriate. The text seems fuller than elsewhere - before Around the Moon, there is a note that it is a sequel to From the Earth to the Moon.
Mais, there always is a mais, sixteen of the novels, the poetry and plays are still in the original French. That still leaves you with 50 novels etc - and a chance to practise your French.
Very very rarely is
there an error in the typesetting,
but not enough to spoil the flow or reduce the pleasure.
Some of his attitudes would be unacceptable today - some would classify him as a racist, but he was a man of his time. It is worth noting that while traversing Africa, he has one his characters point out that some of the unpleasant actions they observe are closely mirrored much closer to home.
In spite of the minor problems listed, I see no reason not to award the full five stars. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 star hokum 24 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I first read these tales over 65 years ago when The world was less explored and my critical powers undeveloped. The author is a master of invention and a master of minimum explanation. A total absence of racial understanding might offend some but we are in a period many years ago. I would summarise as Boys Own yarns of yesteryear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pick and choose 27 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Some enjoyable stories and some I have only ever seen on screen. What I really enjoy about literature of this period are the misconceptions in science before modern discovery and some of the archaic attitudes to items such as sex and race.
