5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary value 24 Sept. 2012

This Delphi Classics series of 'complete works' really does represent extraordinary value. As a teenager I read the famous Rider Haggard African adventure novels, such as 'She' and 'King Solomon's Mines', and I was familiar with about a dozen of his books. This collection includes all 57 novels, 12 short stories and 3 works of non-fiction, so much of this material is new to me - and has been a revelation. 'Dawn', for example, is a study of human relationships dealing with blighted loves and the power of bitter envy to corrupt. As much of the material was written about 100 years ago, the writing can feel rather dated and ponderous, with some of the social attitudes seeming downright weird. Nevertheless, the writing has power and conviction. The background notes are interesting. Acquiring this volume of work for under £2 has to be a 'must buy' - particularly as Delphi Classics appears to have a very robust ebook system with very, very few formatting issues.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'I speak of Africa and golden joys...' 22 July 2012
By FictionFan TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE VOICE

Having read and re-read some of the best-known Rider Haggard novels as a child, many of the images have stayed as part of my fictional landscape. So it is a delight to travel back to Africa again with my childhood heroes Allan Quatermain, Umslopogaas et al - and Gagool the witch-finder is just as scary and evil as I remember.

These Delphi Classics collections are addictive. Well-formatted and full of illustrations, each novel has a short introduction giving the date of publication and some interesting background information. The indexes are well laid out - in this one the novels are listed in groups; The Allan Quatermain Series, The Ayesha Series and so on. I had no idea Rider Haggard was so prolific and it will be a true pleasure to dip into this volume over the years to learn more about these heroes of my past.

A word of caution to anyone reading these books for the first time - written in the 19th century, Rider Haggard reflects the attitudes of the time towards issues of race, though this is mitigated to an extent by the level of respect and admiration shown by the author for the 'savages'. If the reader can leave the modern day behind and accept the world as it was then, s/he will be rewarded by some very well written, fast-moving and thrilling adventures. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Adventure stories 5 Jan. 2013

Several themes run through H. Rider Haggard books. The women are usually very beautiful, so beautiful that men lose all reason and become jealous and possessive. The women have dark eyes. The non-African women have very long hair. The women don't seem to live very long, especially if married to Allan Quatermain. Some of the women are very vain. There is a witch doctor or seer who knows all and sees all. The main character has an obssessive quest or obligation that seems to ruin their lives (is this a Victorian thing?). There is a villian with no redeeming qualities who is after the heroine and sacrifices all to gain her. Some of the women inexplicably submit to the villian. Still, these stories are a cracking good read, especially the Allan Quatermain ones, and are worth experience again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars H Rider Haggard 13 May 2014

Great to read his works again. I was mesmerised by them when I was young, and made weekly visits to the local library to borrow them. They are of course very Victorian and as such not really PC nowadays. But for real adventures and thrills they are great to read. I would recommend them for anyone who enjoys stirring adventure. Haggard paints a very clear picture with his descriptions.

They brought back wonderful memories of my life in Africa and my childhood years.
The writing is captivating and worthy of being included in the masterpieces of the 19th and 20th centuries that have stood the test of time.
