The DEM10 from De'Longhi is a highly efficient compact dehumidifier that can extract 10 litres (or 18 pints) of water from your environment every 24 hours. The more efficient the unit, the lower the running cost, and to optimise its efficiency the DEM10 features a humidistat, allowing you to set moisture to a comfortable level and save energy at the same time.
The DEM10 uses ecological gas R134a and collects demineralised water that is ideal for re-use in, for example, steam irons. Standing at only 42 cm high, the DEM10 compact portable dehumidifier is also ideal for rooms and houses where space is at a premium. It is quiet in operation and has a built-in carry handle to ensure it can be moved around the home with ease.

In May we moved into a 200 year old cottage that had been empty for 10 months or so. There was evidence of an old condensation problem on some of the walls many of which felt damp but there was little or no rising damp. As an artist I work with paper a lot & due to the high indoor humidity this was cockling & you could feel it was damp to the touch. I had assumed that opening the house up & heating it would start to solve the damp problem. The summer has been so wet here this wasn't the case & I bought a Delonghi DEM10 dehumidifier. I chose this model because of the good reviews I had read which mentioned how quiet it was in operation. Within 2 hours it had reduced the humidity in my studio from 75% to 62% & after several hours this was reduced further to 52%. It is removing around 1 litre of moisture every 3 hours & my paper no longer cockles. The same results were found anywhere it has been used & it has reduced the overall humidity in the house by a good 8-10%. It is remarkably quiet & is no noisier than an oscillating table fan. I had planned to use it overnight when I am not working but it doesn't bother me when I'm working. I would definitely recommend this product if you have a smallish house & noise bothers you. One down side is the electricity it uses. It is rated at 230W so uses about 1 unit every 4 hours, not a lot but in constant use 24/7 this adds up. The same would be true for any appliance but it needs to be born in mind when choosing something like this. After 2 weeks constant use it is not now needed all the time & instead is turned on as required. It appears very well made & I have confidence it will give many years service. All in all a very good product.

I bought a DEM10 on Amazon about 2 months ago. Initial performance was very good and it successfully managed to reduce the humidity in a couple of the damp rooms in my apartment. After about two weeks, it started to regularly slip into defrost/pause mode even though room temperature was probably about 18C. I called Delonghi customer service and they confirmed that this was incorrect behaviour. Through Amazon I asked for a replacement device and received one promptly. Unfortunately I experienced the exact same problem with the second model. Initial performance was good but again it started to spend nearly 50% of the time in the fan-only/defrost mode. Another call to Delonghi confirmed that they were seeing problems with the model.
I returned the device and asked for a full refund which I received promptly. It's a pity as when it worked, it worked very well.

This is the type of product I'd never have considered buying until happening upon it by chance on Amazon. It was our first winter in our modern two bed house last year and we suffered condensation on windows badly, leading to the frames suffering a type of fungal growth which wasn't pleasant and risked rotting the wooden frames. After reading about the DEM10 I was keen to try and have now been using one for the last 3 months. It makes a huge difference and the proof it is working is visible from the water that collects in the tank, and the lack of condensation on the windows. The unit is relatively compact and sits on our landing in order to have a central place in the house. The water reservoir is easy to remove and replace, and can have it changed in 20 secs. Normally it's on for about 6 hours a day and requires the water to be emptied every other day. The unit is quiet with only a small hummmm eminating, I don't thing you'd want it on in a bedroom while sleepng but the landing is fine for us. I'd be interested to know the energy consumption of this unit but suspect it isn't huge having seen my last energy bill was less than expected. Overall very happy with this product and would highly recommend it.
Update Oct 2010: Still going strong. Recently got an Owl electricity monitor and it tells me this uses ~0.35kwh which seems pretty reasonable to me

Noisy!
Great little unit, but incredibly noisy. Have had 3 replaced now, 2 by Amazon and 1 by De'longhi....all so noisy!!

Seems to work but several issues
+ve = seems to extract moisture ok.
-ve = quite noisy, you could certainly not have it on whilst sleeping, I had to buy a timmer for it. Read more
