Germany released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Surround ), German ( Dolby Surround ), WIDESCREEN (1.85:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: The apex of director Michele Soavi's early gothic horror career, Dellamorte Dellamore is, along with Pupi Avati's L'Arcano Incantatore (1996), one of the finest examples of turn of the millennium Italian gothic fantasy. Overflowing with atmosphere, dark humor and bitter romance, this feature adaptation of author Tiziano Sclavi's Dylan Dog series of comics (indeed, the titular character of the original series was modeled after Dellamorte star Rupert Everett) utilizes the unmistakable legacy of Italian horror forefathers Mario Bava and Dario Argento as a springboard to some of the most memorable and original imagery and storytelling in recent years. Everett's resigned nature and non-blinking acceptance of the horrific events surrounding both Dellamorte and his faithful assistant Gnaghi (standing-in for a clone of legendary comic Groucho Marx in Dylan Dog) lend a surreal touch to the proceedings, and as the plot winds unpredictably towards it's humorously morose existential climax we are treated to commentary on everything from Italian politics to questions of identity and issues of love and obsession. Manuel De Sica's score, a curious hybrid of classic Ennio Morricone and throbbing Goblin excess, offers the perfect auditory accompaniment to the proceedings as our dry-witted protagonist ponders "the living dead and the dead living" and searches to find his place in keeping the balance of life and death in tact. While obviously influenced by the gothic excess of those who came before him, the film nevertheless retains a remarkably personal air of creativity that pointed to great things for the director who once served as second unit director for Terry G...Cemetery Man (Dellamorte Dellamore) (GER) ( Dellamorte Dellamore ) ( Of Death and Love )

Francesco Dellamorte(Rupert Everett) has a problem. The people he buries in the graveyard where he is the keeper, won't stay dead. His problems escalate when a coach load of school children and a biker gang all end up six foot under, especially as his assistant Gnaghi has taken a shine to the Mayor's daughter, one of the deceased.
This visually stunning treat from the imagination of brilliant Italian director Michele Soavi, really is uncatagorisable. Its a zombie film, a black comedy, a love story and fairytale all rolled into one, and if any film copuld be called a 'thinking persons zombie bloodbath' then this is it. Rupert Everett is fantastic as Dellamorte, matter of factly disposing of the local undead populus, and François Hadji-Lazaro is equally good as Dellamorte's dim witted assistant Gnaghi. These two characters make a great double act, and they remind me a bit of Professor Ambronsius and Alfred in Polanski's 'Dance Of The Vampires'. The sets and special effects are also top notch
A treat for the senses. 5 out of 5

Essential viewing 2 May 2008

I love this films. Rupert is superb and Anna Falchi is great as 'she'.
Soavi let loose from Dario Argento and made this stunning piece of black comedy, zombie, gorgeous camera work feast. Nothing can touch this. Thank you Michele, I hope you and your son are well, such a shame this was your last film. Very talented, the last of the Italien greats.

This movie is sort of out there and you won't even be able to comprehend it at any levels for quite a while. I'm not saying that this isn't a good movie but boy, you don't know exactly what you are getting yourself into once you see this. This highly entertaining little zombie movie from Italy has all the elements that make it a wonderfully dark horror-comedy in the same vein as Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn and An American Werewolf in London.
In Michele Soavi's confusing art-house zombie film, Dellamorte Dellamore, Rupert Everett plays Francesco, a caretaker in a cemetery where the dead don't stay buried for long. Aided by his simple assistant, Gnaghi, Francesco deals with the cemetery's zombie problem by either shooting the undead in the head or splitting their skulls with a spade. However, soon after falling for the mysterious beautiful widow of one of his recently interred, Francesco finds himself busier than ever before...

I probably shouldn't categorize it as just a "zombie movie" because it contains friendship, love and one man's struggle to escape his destiny. It 's not just another empty hack & slash movie with no heart. No, there's clever dialogue and good performances here. For example, the relationship between Dellamorte and his faithful assistant Naghi is both touching and quite funny.

Visually, the film is outstanding. The moody, surreal gothic sets really enhance the fright factor of the movie. There is also some neat camera work that invokes a few "WOW's." There are however a few scenes that are hard to watch that, ironically, don't even involve the zombies (ex: Naghi throwing up on the Mayor's daughter). Overall though, this movie is FUN! I mean, really: the subject matter is about a cemetery caretaker killing zombies - is this something we encounter in our daily lives? Probably not. So why not make it stylish and funny and something our brains can appreciate - even in its absurdity.
