I had been researching monitors suitable for photography for quite a while. After weighing up the "value for money" angle, I decided on this monitor. WOW! it's excellent, very sharp and adds a new dimension to my photography. However, Dell say that it factory calibrated and needs minimal adjustment from the user; not true in my case.

The first thing I noticed was that it was very blue so I immediately calibrated it with Colormunki, then the monitor was just awesome. The prime colours pop of the screen and look almost 3 dimensional. The sharpness/detail is very impressive.

Very good build quality, sits on a great stand with very easy hight, tilt and rotation adjustment.

If you edit images in Photoshop, I really recommend this monitor, especially if you calibrate it yourself.

Many people browsing this page will be aware of some of the quality control issues surrounding the various revisions of this monitor. Thankfully Amazon are now shipping the A01 revision, which corrects some of the dithering issues present when using the Adobe RGB colour setting on the A00 version.

I suppose I would really rate this as 4 1/2 stars. It's every bit as good as the other reviewers say, and being the latest revision, A02, it doesn't have the colour problems of the earlier versions. My only gripe is colour calibration under Windows 7 pro. If you install the drivers off the CD that comes with the monitor it includes a colour profile. The result in my case was a pronounced blue cast. As you may know there is a monitor calibrator as an option in Control Panel > Display, but invoking this warns you that there is now a wide gamut profile installed and if you proceed it will be replaced by one with a standard gamut. Dell need to either revise their colour profile on the disk or provide a means of adjusting it.

First I must admit my prejudice, I have been using a Dell 2407WFP, 24 inch monitor for the last 5 years and I've never been able to fault it.

I calibrate my monitor using an i1 (eye one) colorimeter and use it primarily to edit photographs for printing, so colour accuracy is my key consideration.

So here we are in 2012 and I'm thinking it's maybe time to replace my 2407. There have been advances in screen and backlight technology since I bought the 2407. The S-PVA screen was state of the art back in 2007 but is now competing with IPS screens offering improvements in sharpness, contrast and brightness and a slight improvement in response times, which might be handy for those odd occasions when I watch a video or DVD.

The CCFL backlight that was used in most TV and monitor screens is fast being replaced with LED backlights that reach their peak output within seconds, where CCFLs take at least 15 minutes (and longer as they age). The LED monitors are also much slimmer and lighter, give off less heat and use less energy.

I decided to try one of the latest Dell's with a slightly larger screen, the Dell U2711 (27inch). This had the latest IPS screen but still used a CCFL backlight which gave it a wider gamut of colors to draw on (this reduces banding and generally enhances colour reproduction). Like most monitors, the factory settings do produce a "Wow!" factor. But I have come to realise that this is a far cry from the sort of accuracy needed to edit photographs for printing. So, after calibrating the monitor, I was happy to accept a more sober and realistic balance of colour, brightness and contrast.

I was a little disappointed by the chunky appearance, the frame seemed disproportionately wide for the size of the screen.

I got this screen to work as a primary display for my MacBook Pro 13". I use it to do quite a lot of photo editing in addition to watching films and other general use. The specs of the Dell U2410 blow all other similarly priced, and in many cases higher priced monitors out of the water.

Build quality and design:-
All relatively basic, black plastic with the exception of a section of metal in the stand.
The touch sensitive menu buttons help streamline the design but can, at times, be unresponsive.
The portrait view is a great addition, only problem with it is that when in landscape view the screen is very slightly crooked, with the bottom right corner hanging down. Hight adjust however, is well designed, making it fast and easy to raise and lower the screen.
Massive number of ports and connectivity options gets a thumbs up too.

Display quality:-
Simply incredible, huge number of supported colours and a fair response time. The IPS panel gives an impressive viewing angle.
There is a particularly heavy matt coating which cuts down on glair and reflection and gives a truer and more accurate contrast on photos. However images displayed do look better at a distance from the screen because of this heavy matt.

Display set-up:-
It comes with a number of Dell preset colour settings and industry standards such as Adobe RGB and sRGB.

Overview:-
A fantastic quality display at a good price, unfortunately let down by the build quality of the casing. If it wasn't for this it would get 5 stars from me.
