I found this recording of Delius, comprising Paris: The Song of a Great City, the Double Concerto and the Cello concerto with Tasmin Little (violin) and Raphael Wallfisch (cello) and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Charles Mackerras, has wide dynamics, reflecting that the conductor has an energetic approach to the music.
It is a good programme on this release with the two concertos and the song of a great city. Having been to paris myself I can say that the score does indeed create a strong atmosphere of the magic of Paris. There is what I would imagine as the spirit of Paris at the end of the nineteenth century and reminds us of the other association of art and artistic expression of the great city of Paris. The score is rather rich in texure just like a painting of the era. The dynamics of the recording are wide. As a result, one must resist the temptation to raise the volume control at the beginning, where Paris begins very quietly before climbing to full volume. Though the balance produces plenty of presence and immediacy, the overall sound recorded in the Liverpool Philharmonic orchestra is rich and interesting. Tasmin Little is on top form on violin and Raphael Willfisch is great on the cello.
The presentation of the product is very good and this is an excellent release.
