Some glowing performances here from Barbirolli with either his own Halle Orchestra or the LSO. Brigg Fair just about hangs together but its not a memorable work compared to the lovely warmth of the glowing Florida Suite. The more well known works such as the 'Walk into Paradise Garden' and the 'Song of Summer' have tremendous impact, the classic Barbirolli 'con-amore' richness; the LSO strings are rivetting in both pieces. There's plenty of atmosphere in the more impressionistic works, again the LSO playing with due sensitivity. Considering its price, this is a fine Delius collection in every respect (given reservations about Brigg Fair).

A debt of gratitude is owed to Eric fenby for his notation of several of the works here and for the arrangement of others. A debt of gratitude is owed for the arrangements that Beecham made and for his championing of this music when others were reluctant. And then there is the absolute mastery of Sir John Barbirolli with the beloved Halle Orchestra and with the London Symphony Orchestra. The sound is ravishing and the senses are delighted. I made a discovery - 'Late Swallows' from the 3rd movement of a String Quartet that Delius wrote while a refugee in England during the 1st World War. His thought is of the swallows at his home in France. Eric Fenby has done a lovely job of making this available for String Orchestra and Sir John ensures that the string playing is special. On the cover of these CDs is a quotation written in the score of 'In a Summer Garden'. -
'All are my blooms and all sweet blooms of love to thee I gave while spring and summer sang.'
In the last month of his life, with great tenderness, Sir John recorded 'Brigg Fair' and Appalachia'. I am filled with ecstasy as also in the final track on CD 2 - 'A Song of Summer' that Eric Fenby notated as Delius life drew to a close. I am full up.

We have here a record of music by Frederick Delius played the way I always envisaged it should be played - lovingly and in a measured way. There are only two conductors for me who capture the essence of Delius in their interpretations: one is Sir Thomas Beecham; the other is featured on this double EMI CD - Sir John Barbirolli. I have several of these tracks on vinyl LPs but to hear such a collection (nearly 150 minutes worth) on CD was a real treat. There is a tendency amongst performers today to rush through pieces as if they want to get home early. The music here never drags, but is played at such a pace that the listener can savour the nuances of expression in Delius Music - or its arrangements by Eric Fenby. The most substantial piece here is the so-called orchestral rhapsody Appalachia, though it includes the voices of the Ambrosian Singers and the baritone, Alun Jenkins. The tenor Robert Tear is heard in the Serenade from Delius' opera Hassan. Brigg Fair and several other orchestral tone poems run for less than 20 minutes each but there are a dozen of them which altogether make for a most entertaining and relaxing Delius programme.

The music of Frederick Delius stands in a class of its own, owing nothing, at first sight, to any other composer or tradition. When it goes well, as if does here, it creates a sense of absolute Magic and joy in life of which nobody else seems capable. To do this it is essential that the speed is right. It must have time to breathe and the listener savour the moment. Sir John Barbirolli had a rare ability of treasuring the moment and excelled in the translucent beauty of orchestral texture typified by Delius's quieter moments. Many people find his tempi too slow but to this listener at any rate everybody else is unbearably rushed by comparison. The recording of Brigg Fair here, his last recording, has come in for a lot of flack for its slow tempi, but this is the one by which I judge all other efforts.
The only niggle I have with this disc is not the music, which is superb, but the quality of the product itself. Why oh why can't the record companies produce a CD which doesn't get stuck or jump back a few staves all the time? My machine is not the newest or best but it is capable of playing something to the end without jumps when the Disc itself is alright.

EMI - you must do better than this !

Frederick Delius born of German descent began as a teenage rebel reluctantly joining the family business before clearing off to Florida where American folk music began to influnce his early composition like The Floida Suite and later Appalachia. Before that he'd travelled to Germany and France where he met Maurice Ravel.
Delius though is mainly known for beautiful English pastoral music and was himself a pantheist.
In 1922 came the first signs of what would eventually kill him-syphilus leading to blindness and paralysis.A horrible end to a man whose music suggested green fields, birdsong and woods and all things English and Pastoral.
Like the equally hideous end to Tchaikovsky parts of his life were covered up allowing him to live without anyone looking for scandal
