With a seamless and unique blend of music hall, comic books and heavy rock, SAHB became a major UK live draw during the mid-70s. Led by the twinkling eye and imposing charismatic presence of their proudly Glaswegian frontman Alex Harvey, a 60s blues scene veteran, their singularly vaudevillian exploits and astoundingly dynamic cohesion of hitherto unrelated genres couldn't help but melt even the hardest of hearts. Delilah, named for their chart-busting cover of Tom Jones' finest hour, is a perfect introduction to the SAHB canon in that it judiciously collates a truly representative sprinkling of the band's finest recorded moments. From their strident take on Leiber and Stoller's "Framed", through the gorgeously bagpipe-drenched tear-jerkings of "Anthem", to the epic, proto-electro stylings of "Faith Healer", Delilah is a testament to pure genius. Alex Harvey tragically died in 1982, but his priceless legacy lingers on, so go on, sample a slice. --Ian Fortnam

The best known of the band's hits merit selection on this CD but SAHB's magnificent rendition of "Tomorrow belongs to me" sung as if it were a nursery lullaby soothing an infant to sleep belies its Hitler Youth genesis and steals the show. As ever, Alex Harvey [whose politics run entirely counter to the Master Race images of this song] is the master entertainer. A sad, sad loss to the music business.

The Sensational Alex Harvey Band were the first live act my mate Mick and I saw, at Slough Community Centre, and they hooked us from the start. We were only 13. I'd bought Framed on the basis of hearing Faith Healer in a record shop in Egham and loved the whole album, even though it sounded nothing like Marc Bolan or David Bowie, which was the stuff we usually listened to. Alex was a wonderful showman; if only the Hammersmith Odeon concert (which we attended) had been captured on film even more people would have witnessed just how he managed to get the audience in the palm of his hand from the first moment to the last. The band were fantastic, all great musicians who loved to give their fans full value for money. Even when they split up I got to see Alex, with a young group behind him in a very odd gig at London Palladium, the highlight of which was him sitting on a bar stool and taking the weewee out of "Anarchy In The UK" by singing it very slowly indeed. I SAHBWA as well, when Alex was ill, and wish I could find a CD of Fourplay. The more recent version of the band, with another singer, was good to watch too. That first show not only convinced us of just how great a band SAHB were, but how much fun live music could be. Alex Harvey was a brilliant performer, and of all the front men I have seen since he is still not bettered.

I am not sure how one of the other reviewers arrived at the conclusion this was a live recording. I was therefore a little disappointed to find that, whilst a couple of the tracks are live, most are not. Nevertheless, it is still undeniably a great collection of SAHB performances.

Blast from the past, rave from the grave , Alex Harvey and some of his greatest hits. Good music from an under rated genius.
