CGI-animated fantasy adventure featuring the voice talents of Freddie Prinze Jr, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Anne Bancroft and Val Kilmer. The land of Jhamora is being torn apart by the conflict between its two peoples: the winged Nohrin and the terrestrial Lockni. Hostilities between the two civilisations reach boiling point when the exiled Empress Sedessa (Bancroft) returns to exact her revenge on those who banished her. When troubled Lockni teenager Delgo (Prinze Jr) forms a secret friendship with the spirited Nohrin princess Kyla (Hewitt), the two must lay aside their differences and race against time to prevent all-out war and save the world from annihilation.
This is a reasonable animation film, with a typical story line (good triumphing over evil!) I bought it so I could listen to Val Kilmer's voice (voice being better than no Val at all!) Even in animation, he meets a grizzly end though! The film got some mixed reviews when it was released, and didn't do well in cinemas (the fault of just advertising it on childrens tv? - they don't usually make the choice of what to see!) I'm sure childeren will enjoy it though.
when you see this animation it is easy to see why it didnt do well in cinemas and why it only got to be available for american format dvd and televisions. even though it has some big name movie stars voices in it and the basic story premise looks ok delgo fails to deliver. the charectors are more annoying than endearing, all the comedy scenes fail to be even slightly funny while all the more serious parts of the story line dont fit the 'trying to be a cute quirky animation' style of the film. its like having assasination, murder, kidnap and genocide in the middle of a dr. seuss book. the animation is even reminiscent of dr. seuss illustrations ! it doesnt work. it would fail to hold young childrens attention and would bore anyone older very easily. and finally its safe to say that the animation just isnt that good. despite attempts to make the delgo world lush and vibrant everything looks like it was put together in set pieces. it all looks and sounds like everyone who worked on it was trying too hard to make it work when basically its not that good an idea for an animation. you cant turn a sows ear into a silk purse.
